I'm seeing other reports of it too. It errors with and without SSL. It looks like the server is overloaded to me. My only suggest is to sign up with a backup server.

Originally we thought it was related to the new beta but we're getting reports for several other versions. Eventually the connection goes through. It just takes awhile.

I think this has gone on for about 3 or 4 days.
I posted the same question at Giganews support, who says:

Maybe they will have an answer.

I'm using usenetserver and there are zero errors. The first thing they'll probably tell is that it's Newsbin. Take it with a grain of salt.

Getting a similar issue with supernews. I only get the "ERROR Error Unknown Download Exception" part though. It started happening like a few days ago when supernews suddenly went down for a couple of hours then when it came up I have been getting this error on and off constantly. Today it doesn't seem to want to download headers at all so far.

Quade: Is there a way to download the latest headers from my other news service without having to have it download all the headers I have missed from that news service since the last time (or maybe never have) downloaded before? I basically just want it to download the latest headers from where I left off. For example I go to download the latest headers from my usual source Supernews, I'd get something like 300,000 to download and process, but if I switch to usenetserver (even after just downloading the 300,000 latest) I have something like 27,000,000 + headers to download and process.

If you set the "Download age" to something short like 3 days, then right click the group "Post Storage/Use Download Age"

Newsbin will then just download 3 days worth of headers from any server which permits header downloads.

Can download age be lower than a day say .5? (some groups are just insane even 1 day can take hours of processing to put into the database).

1 is probably the lower limit.

Hmm I don't think I am doing the download age thing right. In one group the last download from supernews was 13 hours ago, so I right click on the group check the download age box and set it to one after changing my news server to get headers from usenetserver. When I go to download the latest it's grabbing from about 128days ago (so I canceled the download). I think I am missing a step. Download age says "how many days to download for an empty group" but the group is technically not empty as it has headers from the other news server.

1 - Right click the group and select "Post Storage/Use Download Age"

2 - In the the main options, set "Download Age" to 1 day.

3 - Download headers normally.

I'd go back into the group options and clear any age you set in there.

Thanks #1 what I was missing. I thought post storage->use download age would wipe delete the already downloaded headers but that was my misunderstanding.

Right. It just changes the pointer to the last record downloaded. It doesn't impact the headers already stored

I'd just like to add to these error reports.
I upgraded to a new PC with Windows 10 (from Win 7), installed Newsbin and started getting these errors whenever I start a download (I only use NZBs these days because downloading headers from binary groups takes an eternity these days). It's kinda weird that it started happening on the new PC, because the login rejection error message obviously makes no sense in that context. But coming here I see that the problem doesn't only affect me.

[07/15 02:24:30] ERROR Error Unknown Download Exception
[07/15 02:24:51] ERROR Error Unknown Download Exception
[07/15 02:25:11] ERROR NNTP Perform Auth - NEWS SERVER ERROR: Giganews-The server rejected your login - contact your news service's support department. It's not a Problem with Newsbin : 481 invalid username or password [filename] "[filename.extension]" yEnc

ERROR Error Unknown Download Exception appears every time I start a download. Usually multiple times.
ERROR NNTP Perform Auth I usually get once or twice (but sometimes more often) before the server allows me to connect and downloads commence at regular speeds.

Well... here is their reply. I haven't had time to try it yet, so I have no idea if it will make a difference:

Hello,
Thank you for contacting Giganews support.
We apologize for the connection trouble there.
As a troubleshooting step, please try modifying your current port settings.
Port: 563 and 443 if you are using SSL and ports 23, or 80 if you do not want to use SSL encryption.
Once modified and applied, you should be able to establish connections again.
Thank you for contacting us today! Please let us know if you need any further assistance.

Switching SSL port from 563 to 443 is something I tried right away when the error first popped up, made no difference for me.

The login error seems to be resolved, but I still get the ERROR Error Unknown Download Exception error messages.

/e
Trusted in Giganews too soon, that error reappeared now as well.
