"ERROR Error Unknown Download Exception"

Postby banshee28 » Thu May 03, 2018 9:56 pm

Hello, using the past few RC's, currently RC8, I am unable to DL anything. I get "ERROR Error Unknown Download Exception". I have been running NB for many years with not one issue. I am using a VPN, but have tried different VPN servers and its always the same result. I am running Debian now, and if I boot up my Arch Linux install which was using an older NB version, it works fine! Same PC, same VPN, etc.... I am running Wine for NB to work. Would there be a special Wine config I would need to change? Maybe this new RC needs a certain "Windows" feature turned on?

So it sounds like its simply something with the latest RC's. I have used Beta RC's for many years and this is the first time I am running into issues.

I just tried to install 6.73, and it worked right away!!! So that is great, I will keep using that for now, but would like to know if I can fix this Beta release if possible.

I would have posted in the Linux section, however it works fine with the previous releases so figured the Beta forum would be better.

Thanks...

Does it work if you don't use a VPN?

I kinda did not want to try that, but I may soon. I use the VPN on the Arch build and it works fine, and I have used VPN for many years with NB and never had issues. Weird.

Thanks, will try soon.

I'm just suggesting it as a trouble-shooting step.

Usenet isn't like torrents, as long as you use SSL, nobody really knows what you're downloading except the server which is the same whether you use a VPN or not.

So I shutdown VPN and tried RC6,7,8. Neither worked. RC6 gave connection error but both 7/8 gave same error as I posted. I then tried 6.73 and it worked right away with or without VPN! :(

I've tried this on a 32 bit system and it worked. Tried it 32 bits under 64 bit and it worked. The error you're getting is a generic download error. It might not have anything to do with the network.

I'm wondering at this point if upgrading to latest Wine would help?

Great point! I think it very well could be wine related. This is a new Debian install and running vers 1.8.7. I would have to look at the Arch install, but I agree, its probably something within wine.

So......I just noticed 6.8 Final is out today! So I figured I would see if that was any different.

Installed it and same thing. Then I went into the release notes and noticed something very interesting.....

XP is no longer supported! So I think my WIne is probably set to "XP mode" and could be the issue.

I looked at the notes and noticed it says 6.73 is the last version that supports XP....6.73 is the only version working for me!

SO.....Sounds very much like thats my issue. I will look into making these changes and see if that works!

Code: Select all
NOTES:
No longer runs on Windows XP!!! Version 6.73 is the last version that will run on XP
If upgrading from a version prior to 6.60, you should clear your current download, failed, and wish lists before trying the beta.

History
Version 6.80 Release Candidate 8 Build 5055, April 19, 2018
NOTE: Will not run on XP machines.

*** I checked and I was already in Windows 7 mode. I also tried 8 and 10, same results.

Here are the latest wine logs and it appears that i get one of these each time the App shows the error
Code: Select all
wine: Call from 0x7f88630c476c to unimplemented function WS2_32.dll.WSAPoll, aborting

This very well could be the issue

Suggests you're using an outdated wine version.

Well what do ya know......IT was WINE.

I could not get the very latest, still working on that, but Debian stretch has a wine-development package 2.0 so I removed the old and installed this.

It worked first time.

I am now running fine with 6.8 Final, VPN, and Wine 2.0. I will soon update to the very latest Wine once I can get that working with Debian.

Thanks Quade for all the help....Maybe this can help someone else one day...
