Can I safely increase chunk cache size?

Postby EvanVanVan2 » Fri May 26, 2017 8:06 pm

My chunk cache use state is routinely running at 0/200. I see I can increase it manually in the .nbi (https://help.newsbin.com/index.php/V600 ... hunk_Cache).

Can I safely increase it from 200 and by how much?

I have a 64 bit i7-3930k, 32 gb ddr3, samsung 840 pro ssd, is there any other pertinent information?

Thank you

edit: Is chunk cache size why it's recommended to have the download and data folders on separate drives? Would I see a significant benefit from installing a second SSD for that sole purpose?

edit2: I guess this post could have been added to my other thread about gigabit speeds, but figured it may help others as it's own thread...

Have a good holiday weekend!

You should assume 1 meg per block. You can increase it if you want.

The reason it's faster to have different unrar and download drives is that it's simply faster to read from one drive and write to another than it is to read and write the same drive.

If chunk size is going down to 0/xxx then that implies that disk I/O is the current limiting factor on performance as all cache buffers are full waiting on being written to disk. increasing the cache size can help, but if you have really fast download speeds you will find the free buffers still drops to 0 due to disk speed limitations, and in that case anything you can do to increase disk I/O speeds is going to be the way to improve NB performance.

Just saw these replies (I don't think my subscription email notification is working properly), thank you to you both.

We just moved our mail server. I noticed some mail was getting tagged by gmail as spam so the notifications may be in your spam folder. I think we've got it straightened out now, let me know if you received notification of this post.
