headers for certain groups are failing to download

For a few groups, starting today, it will download a few thousand headers and then stop. It keeps stopping at the same number of headers and then it fails and no new headers are shown in the group. It's like there's something in one of the headers that's causing a problem. I've tried turning off all the filters, but the results are the same. Is there a way to force it to ignore the problem and go on? I know the total (shown in the parenthesis) are there because I can see them in a different reader.

What group are we talking about here?

Do you see a number in parens down near where it says "Cache"?

The cache at the bottom says 199/200(1), another group it says 199/200(0)

Just to wrap this up. It turns out "Avast" was blocking the download of compressed headers. When XFeatures was disabled, which disables header compression, it started working again.

Telling avast to ignore newsbin and to ignore it's data folder fixed the problem

Actually, modifying Avast, would seem to have been a coincidence, as the problem has returned. Newshosting says that this problem is probably due to a windows update, and that an earlier version of newbin seems to be working ok. Is this true?

I don't believe it was a coincidence. If Avast updated again since you made the changes it might have started messing with Newsbin again. If you want to test the theory, temporarily disable Avast, reboot your machine, and see if the problem goes away.

Excellent! I couldn't figure out why my newsgroup headers stopped downloading a couple days ago. Avast turned out to the cause. I never would have thought of that.

In Avast Settings, click Components, then click customize in the Mail Shield section. Uncheck the "Scan Newsgroup Messages (NNTP)", then click OK.

Newsbin seems to download the headers fine after doing that.

For me unchecking nntp, or even disabling the mail shield wasn't sufficient. I have to completely turn off avast for a few min and then things work.

I had this too and disabling compressed headers worked, but now after some avast updates I tested and the problem seems to have gone away and I'm back to fast header downloads.

Keep in mind that the data Avast was flagging was randomly generated by the compression process so, working now doesn't promise working in the future. If you can't make Avast completely ignore Newsbin's connections, I'd leave compression turned off.

It was actually a setting in a seemingly odd place I changed, probably not the version update

for avast people it's
Settings -> Components -> Mail Shield -> Customize
and uncheck 'scan newsgroup messages'
unfortunately then your newsgroup messages wont be scanned so be sure to scan whatever might be downloaded
