ULTIMATE NEWSBIN ON LINUX THREAD!

While it isn't officially supported, we have many users who successfully run NewsBin under Linux with a Windows emulator (Wine is the most popular). This forum exists for you Linux guys to share your experience getting NewsBin running on Linux as well as report any strangeness that we may or may not be able to fix. DThor is the resident expert.

ULTIMATE NEWSBIN ON LINUX THREAD!

Postby newsraider » Thu Jan 14, 2016 8:56 pm

Newsbin works great on Linux 8) if you ever wanted to try out Linux but didnt want to leave newsbin behind dont worry you dont have too

this is going to be a pretty simple walk through on installing newsbin on linux because its a pretty simple process these days 8) ill be modifying and adding to this post as i get more tips and feedback from users.

so let us begin :D

1. 1st install wine from your favorite linux distro. im not going to give instructions on installing it since there are so many different commands depending on the distro you use. just open up a package manager and find "wine" if you are having problems with your version of wine or want a more updated wine. head over to https://www.winehq.org/download and add the wine repo. myself im using http://antergos.com which uses http://www.archlinux.org repos so the wine is pretty current. if you are a new user of linux my advice would be to start out with  Ubuntu. lots of different versions to choose from depending on your desktop preference. here is a link to them all http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu-flavours

2. now lets go get Newsbin http://www.newsbin.com/freetrial.php you will want the "ALTERNATE INSTALLER" its down the page a little bit. now go to your download folder and right click the newsbin installer and select open with wine command. it should just be a normal install after that.

Image

3. now to run wine. depending on your distro it will make a shortcut in your programs section but if not you can easily run newsbin by going to the terminal and copy paste
Code: Select all
wine /home/yourlinuxusernamerightinhere/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Newsbin/NewsbinPro64.exe
also you can make a shortcut to the newsbin program folder and run the newsbinpro64.exe directly. do a control H to show hidden files and folders. then browse to your newsbin folder and save the folder under your file manager bookmarks.

Image

4. UnRar and Par2. these shouldn't be needed as newsbin should take care of that but if you do have some files that need to be extracted. Linux has the tools to do it. in your software manager look for "Unrar" "par2" most Distros will come up with Archive manager that will handle the rest.

thats it! 8)

I was actually wondering if it could be put into a docker container and work. I'm not sure containers support graphical applications.

Hi guys! First post and while not brand new to Linux I haven't used it for many years. I have the latest Ubuntu (15.10?) installed on a dual boot. I'm trying to wean myself off windows and the last stumbling block has been getting Wine installed and having NB (pro build 4358) working properly within that environment. Its working great except for one thing - I keep getting a message when I do a search:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bad Request

Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.
Reason: You're speaking plain HTTP to an SSL-enabled server port.

Any ideas?

TIA.

I think this has been resolved. Turns out Newsbin wasn't registered properly. The failure mode was misleading. It's actually complaining about the error message the search server is sending back I believe.

Yes it has. As it turns out I only needed to restart NewsBin after making some changes. I changed the news server to an SSL but didn't restart the program - hence the message. After a restart the search engine is working fine.

I do have one more question and the answer may be obvious but I don't see it: On the very left in the message header display box the + opens up the threads individual segments of a download - in windows I was able to click on that + and each individual segment appeared below the main header. In the download que I get the same thing. This does not work for me now. Any reason why this should be? Other than that one thing NewsBin seems to run fine under Wine. TIA!

Are you trying to expand the post in the Post List or the Download List? The reason I ask is that the mechanisms are different. If you are doing it from the post list on search results, it actually has to hit our server to perform the expansion. If it's a really big file, it could take awhile. Since you are running under wine, it may take even longer, possibly long enough to timeout. Try it with a smallish post and see if it makes a difference. If you are saying you can't expand it in the download list then I'm not sure, could be a wine thing.

Both lists. I get no expansion of the files list in either pane. When I find one rar file that is corrupted I usually look for a prior or more recent post to grab that one rar file from. I've been using Newsbin for many years now - can't even remember when I first got it - probably 15 or more years ago. I've never had this problem before. Other than this one hitch so far the program responds the same as it did under windows. Is there any way to install WinRar and Quick Par via Wine?

I appreciate the help. Thanks!

Pretty sure the non-expansion thing is a bug in wine. You need to use the right arrow on the cursor pad. The + icon doesn't "hit-test" correctly in wine.

Hmm. Not sure if the new problem is caused by Wine or NewsBin. When I execute NewsBin it starts minimized - when I click on the icon on the left I get a window that is a picture of my desktop. When that happens my computer is non-responsive to any further action and I have to do a hard reset & reboot. NewsBin had worked fine other than the minor issue above - now this. Any ideas?

First thing I'd do is make sure the machine and Wine is updated. Anything that kills your machine is normally a driver or lower level problem.

In the "Data Folder" which is the folder Newsbin keeps most of it's settings in. I'd try deleting "Workspace.xml.

when did this start happening? after a recent wine update? what desktop are you using? kde, xfce, lxde? to see whats going on behind the scenes you can always start newsbin from the terminal and it will show you what is going on.

wine /home/yourlinuxusernamerightinhere/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Newsbin/NewsbinPro64.exe

havent seen this issue myself and ive used kde and openbox. when all else fails just remove the install and start over. backup your date folder. its a very quick process.

A little heads up. In order to use version 6.72, I had to upgrade wine from 1.6 to 1.8, since automatic par repair had stopped working. Here is a short description for Newsbin with this on Linux Mint 18 (same base as Ubuntu 16.04):

Install wine:
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt install wine1.8

Install Newsbin:
  • Download the Newsbin installer (you can just use the regular one)
  • Double-click the installer in the file-browser. (Should already be registered to wine)
  • Installation should proceed normally
  • When newsbin starts, Wine might prompt to install some packages. Just do this

You can optionally install quickpar into wine as well, same as with newsbin. This enables the quickpar link in newsbin
