Too Many Connections

Postby GrouchoBarx » Thu May 19, 2016 2:20 pm

Hi,

I recently downloaded and installed 6.70 Build 4600 and am now getting a whole bunch of connection errors. Here's a sample:

[10:06:34] ERROR DG - Connection Failed: GigaNews_-_US Server Index:2 481 (remote) (aucl:gn;gn300510) exceeded maximum number of connections per user
[10:06:34] ERROR DG - Connection Failed: GigaNews_-_US Server Index:2 481 (remote) (aucl:gn;gn300510) exceeded maximum number of connections per user

[10:06:38] ERROR DG - Connection Failed: GigaNews_-_US Server Index:2 481 (remote) (aucl:gn;gn300510) exceeded maximum number of connections per user
[10:06:41] ERROR GigaNews - Europe Error talking to Server:
[10:06:45] ERROR GigaNews - Europe Error talking to Server:

I have a GigaNews Diamond account with 50 connections. I am using 30 Connections with a US server and 20 connections with a Europe server. (30+20=50).

I use SSL for both servers.

I am still downloading articles, but it is much slower than I am used to.

Thanks

That error message is typical if you have Newsbin configured to use all the allowed connections. It can take the server several minutes to make a connection available for use again after it has been closed, so you want to leave a pool of unused connections to allow for this. Maybe values like 25 and 15 would stop the error message.

In fact since each connection has an overhead then you want to use the minimum number of connections that can max out your connection. Just because your provider allows a large number of connections does not mean you have to use them.

^ Agreed. I only need 6 connections to max out my 300Mb/s internet connection.

Thanks for the advice. It is interesting that I've never seen this behavior before, but I certainly bow to your expertise!

When you run at the limit, any kind of connectivity problems can push you over. So it can be intermittent.

I've never experienced it before the last release either, and I only have 8 connections. Even at 7 I still occasionally get the errors.

6.71 now has a 20 second delay on disconnect and re-connect. We'll see if that changes anything. I run 10 of my possible 20 connection to AW and never get "too many connections" errors. I'm always getting connection errors with AW over SSL. It only happens with AW so I know it's some AW issue.

In 6.71 they're listed as "timeout waiting for data". Newsbin sends a command to AW and it never replies.
