Version 6.62 Beta 4 Available...

Postby dexter » Wed Oct 28, 2015 11:27 am

More changes and fine tuning to handle changing trends in Usenet

Changes:

  • Fixed issue where Subs would combine with the main set. Some posters are using a different format for identifying subs posts.
  • Now sends a file to the Failed Files tab if all PAR files download and there still aren't enough blocks to reliably make a repair.
  • Fixed issue with strict yEnc mode. One path through the code wasn't failing one failure mode.
  • Implemented more reliable message-id checking
  • Tweaked mechanism for grabbing embedded passwords in NZB files if they exist.

The download link is on the Newsbin Beta Page.

Is there some sort of memory usage/leak problem? After going to 6.6x to fix the incomplete problems on usenet I noticed it running a lot slower. When I open up a group now memory usage maxes out (4 gig) and sits at 92% used and it never did that before?

If you look down at the status bar at the cache line, how many cache blocks are set? The default is 200. It works out to about 1 meg per block. Some people were setting crazy high numbers. "Help/About" will flush the cache blocks to disk.

200/200 (0)

As soon as I close the group, memory usage goes down to normal.

Sounds like it's specific to the group then. What group is it?

Some groups are unusable with headers these days.

Ya, a.b.dvd is pretty useless. I deleted add dvd groups. Will see what happens.

What's your "Display Age" set to? I have mine set to 10 to 60. it's how many days it loads for normal browsing. How many days you load, controls how much RAM it uses.

It is set at 60, although I thought I had it at 5. It somehow changed through 1 of the updates. I think.....

I was mistaken. My download and storage are set to 3. Should I change display to 3 also?

Memory usage is back to normal now also.

You probably don't have to since you're only storing 3 days worth of headers. I'd probably set it lower anyway.

I've noticed that on 6.62B4 downloading seems to temporarily stop when a repair/unrar is in progress. Is that how it's supposed to behave? It may just be that I hadn't noticed it in previous versions, so not sure that this is new or unexpected behavior. Thanks!

Yeah, that's how it works now. The unrar/repair can be up to 4x faster if the download is paused. We are thinking about making it optional again but it would require some pretty major re-work.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm not asking to revert to previous behavior - spend your effort on other more worthwhile features!

Last-update time-stamps seem to be off by one hour - Windows says time is 6:39am, while a freshly-started-just-updated NBPro says groups were last updated at 7:39am. Maybe it's confused about Daylight Savings time? This is on a Win8.1 machine.

Thanks.

When NB downloads a video set of .rar files, it seems to detect that there is a problem with the set, but it does not download any .par files. If I expand the entry and tell it to download a .par file, it fixes the set and creates the video. This seems to be new behavior.

How many retries do you have set? Newsbin will automatically download pars each time the retry count is exceeded so, you might want to set it to 2, if it's higher than that so, after 2 retries Newsbin will download the next PAR.
