Version 6.60 Issues

Postby Murg » Fri Jul 24, 2015 6:42 am

I upgraded to version 6.60. Wish I hadn't.

After completely downloading new headers, and then clicking on the group, it takes about a minute for a group's posts to load on the posts screen for a group (under 2000 posts). The posts load in dribs and drabs.

My default post screens load with Hide Old and no filter. I just had a posts screen with a lot of red minus icon (post/file is filtered). Can't figure out how they got there. Also a bunch of lines were coloured as old (grey) (and they weren't incompletes). The grey lines were both the Post/file is filtered and (I) contains nfo/sfv. I reset the filter profile to none (which it already was on) and the grey lines and Post/file is filtereds went away.

Is there anyway to turn off the (I) contains nfo/sfv icon? I'm quite happy to just have the Compact Display icon.

On the plus side, it looks like post deletion is happening a lot quicker.

I'm having similar experience:-

1. The headers take a lot longer to load up with this new version (they are stored on a regular HDD not SSD; but this has not changed)
2. The download order is screwed up
You used to be able to sort by the column headers (e.g. download smallest items first) and it would download in the order of the list.
It's a bit weird if you move something to the top it seems to get download priority, but somewhere along the way it reverts back to the order in which the downloads were added to the queue
I exited and restarted newsbinpro and this did not seem to help.

The previous release was better....... (and this is an exception in all the years I've been using the product!)

Are you saying you re-downloaded or just did a normal header download? If I had to guess, I'd guess the headers are still importing. Look down at the status bar where it says "Cache" if you see a number in parens, the header download hasn't completed yet. Until that number goes to zero, you won't have all current headers available for quick loading.

2. The download order is screwed up

I'm not seeing it but I'll have to try again. There was an issue with this in prior betas.

You can always revert versions.

Normal header download. Which completed before I tried to display the posts.

I'm seeing this. It depends on if all the posts load in the first batch (like for small groups). If the group loads the screen in a bunch of batches, the order is out of order.

I had a group posts screen up, most of the posts had the filtered icon, with the standard filter profile of None. Changed the filter profile to nothing (Filter Profile). All the posts went away (the page is set to Hide Old). When I change the filter profile to none, no posts are visible. When I Display Settings to None, The new posts are there, but the previously filtered iconed posts are now a normal icon and coloured as old. The previously non-filter iconed posts are in the new post colour of green. Remember, this is with the Display Settings of None.

I also think that another group didn't mark the displayed posts as old yesterday, and are re-showing them as new posts.

In all the years I've used Newsbin I've never come across this problem which I've encountered since upgrading to v6.60.

I always ensure that I have at least 25GB free on my hard drive. If you pardon the expression I haven't got a big one and I try to keep a certain amount free.

In previous versions, even tho' it states that I've d/l headers to the extent of various Gigabytes in fact it's quite compact due to them being compressed.

After upgrading to the latest version I started to d/l the latest headers and went to have a drink. By the time I got back I had a flashing box appear saying low space on drive (90mb) Image link not allowed for unregistered users .

I couldn't understand. How could I have filled up my drive just with headers ?.

I went to the folder in my explorer window (AppData/Local/Newsbin/Import) and found that instead of having all .gz files as before (which amounted to a total of 2.79GB) I had a combination of those PLUS 24.3GB of .txt files)

Can anyone advise me as to what I've done wrong. Image link not allowed for unregistered users

Is it an instillation problem ? I followed the directions as before and never had any problems whatsoever.

Many thanks in advance

I'm having the same problem, I currently have 362 GB in my import folder and counting. Granted, I'm getting headers in a fairly big group, but over 300 GB is just ridiculous.

This is on win 8.1, using the 64-bit version with build 4163.

Qaude stopped using the gz compression on incoming header downloads, I wish he hadn't. It helped with importing headers into the DB but it keeps eating a ton of space. The worst part NB 6.60 will remove headers from the download list if it experiences a connection drop/reset, the older NB just restarted the DL. I hope Quade corrects his mistakes.

I'm also getting Critical Error Messages on every download. They are NNTP _CloseChunk - closing a dirty connection.

I rarely got Critical Error Messages before. It's annoying as I now have to Hide until Restart, for something that is apparently normal and self-recovering.

I'm not having any issues like this. Connection failures don't remove anything from the download list but running out of retries does.

What security software are you using? I'd say something is messing with Newsbin's connections. This is a sign that your connections are dropping out and leaving dirty connections behind. I'd say at this point that you're having a fundamental connectivity problem. Even AW hasn't been dropping out for me lately.

Edit: I think I misinterpreted your first comment. You're saying connection failures remove headers downloads from the download list. If that's happening it's worth fixing. The real question is why your connectivity is so bad.

I have exactly the same problem.

As I'm downloading multi-part files, the error window slowly fills with that message - one for each and every part. Only started since upgrading to 6.60 Final. There's no issues with my connection, and I aren't using any security software other than MS Security Essentials.
Note that apart from the error message, the downloads do seem to download and UnPAR and UnRAR just fine.

There is an issue with the connection. That's why you get this error. Keep in mind some level of dropped connections is normal.

Usenet connections can persist for a very long time. They're completely different from web browsing where the connection might only last a minute or less. It's one reason why usenet and WIFI don't get along really well because WIFI is inherently unreliable.

So, if you see this error from time to time it can be ignored. If you get 500 of them when you download a 1G set of files then it's probably a problem.

I see one error per RAR "part".

So for example, if I download a 1GB set of files, split over 20 x 50MB .r01 .r02 .r03 etc. then I'll see the message pop up 20 times. Once for each RAR part.

It doesn't seem to have any effect on anything, so I'm ignoring it for now.

Regarding the CloseChunk error display: I get a few per gigabyte downloaded. I'm in Australia, hitting a US server, so the turnaround time is fairly long. This is a new error popping up, I didn't used to get it.

Regarding the display of the posts screen: this looks like it a 'downloading of headers' issue. When I download the headers, then wait a few minutes after they complete, the post screens show all the posts immediately. I'd say that there is some major aspect of header processing that is being delayed as isn't happening when the headers are being downloaded.

In other news (previously raised):

I've done some checking and deleting posts is now very fast, so thanks for that.

I'm occasionally seeing that the posts are not automatically being marked as old, so I see the same posts two days in a row. I'm still gathering info on this, I haven't see a pattern yet.

I'm still getting the Filter icon on a number of posts, but not consistently.

I'm experiencing the error message also occasionally, which I didn't with other versions. They also come up for a fairly long time, even after the file has been manually removed from the d/l queue.

Another new, strange behavior since the update:
Say you d/l a preview JPG for a file only, the file gets marked as downloaded. You delete it, but later decide to d/l the actual video or whatever it is. Until now the JPG was then marked as a duplicate, but correctly downloaded. The rest of the download goes as planned.

NOW the JPG gets marked as missing and the download has to use PARs to be able to complete the d/l.

I know, it's minor, but it stalls the completion of files.

I have come across another quirk, using the password option. Maybe it's just me, I don't know...

As long as I have not clicked on/selected a tab (Downloading files, Failed etc.) and go to OPTIONS / RAR Passwords... the window comes up and I can edit the PW.
BUT when I have a clicked on a tab (which also makes the 'Download' entry in the main bar visible), nothing happens when I either choose RAR Passwords (from OPTIONS) or Password Manager (from DOWNLOAD). NB occasionally even stalls and crashes after trying to select both.

What is the difference between RAR Passwords and Password Manager anyway :?: Are they both necessary?

It's basically two ways to enter the same window.

How many entries do you have in the password list? I'm not able to make anything fail or crash. Wonder if it could be because by some fluke you happen to try to open the window at the exact moment that the download code is looking for a password?

I'm sorry, but I think I might have to go back to version 6.56.
This, the "dirty connection" issue and now files that are not on the server anymore ("430 no such article") just staying in the DL queue, giving errors and not being removed... it's a bit much.

Regarding posts being tagged with the "filter" icon: is newsbin running the filters against the headers to determine this?

If so, please stop. Or at least let me turn it off.

Not only does it waste processing on a feature I don't want, it seems to be slowing down the initial processing of the new headers, which is causing the staggered display of headers over a minute or so. My filters are a combination of both "good" and "bad" filters, so running them against the headers is completely useless.

B2/B3 loads new headers like 6.56 (6.60 sends them to the top of the list). The filters haven't changed between 6.56 and now so I'm not sure what you're asking about with the filters. The GUI for adding filters has changed but how they work hasn't changed.

There is a Filter Icon on the main posts page. What is the criteria for tagging a post with an Filter Icon?

The criteria is whatever you set it to be. There is a writeup on the changed Filter Dialog screen in the Newsbin Help Wiki Anything you set in the Global filter profile will apply all the time. Otherwise you have to specifically select a filter profile to apply your set filters.

I understand how the filters work.

My question is what is the criteria for the Filter ICON to be turned on for a post in the normal post list, without a filter profile being set in the filter combo box. Some criteria is setting this icon, I don't know what it is.

The Filter Icon is a red circle with a white dash in it. The Icon Legend calls it: Post/File is Filtered
