Updating newsgroup not working 6.6 b9

I just installed v6.6 B9 and when I updated one of my subscribed groups this is what I received instead of a list of new subjects:

I've been using Newsbin for several years and I have never encountered anything like this. What, if anything, am I doing wrong here? Also, posts that are in the list prior to the update that were complete now appear mostly incomplete. What gives? Do I have to re-download all the headers?

Update: I downloaded All Headers for this group, and now my entire group list is trashed.

Sounds like a server problem. What server are you using?

What specific group did you update?

I am using 3 servers, downloading headers from 2 - Astraweb and theCubeNet. I updated my original post with an excerpt from the logfile, hoping that it would help. I have never had this issue until this morning after installing Beta 9. I don't want to even try updating any other groups until I can determine what is going on here. I did try deleting the group, then adding and downloading all headers, the result is what is in the logfile I added to my post above, but will add to this one as well:

Any more info you require I will gladly acquire and submit. The "reggae" group was an entirely new group, and that seemed to update kind of OK, although the most recent post was pretty old. The group I started to update was the "1960s" group, which you will see in the lower half of the above excerpt.

I download and use header almost exclusively so this is either some new obscure bug in Newsbin that's "per group" or there's a server problem.

You only need headers from one server in order to download files from both. You can see from the logs that Newsbin is reporting corrupted data.

Astraweb was working fine this AM before I installed B9, and as I indicated (as an edit) to my previously reply, a new group that I have never used seemed to work OK. I will try your suggestions and report my findings.

I am using SSL, could that be an issue? The results are not good, and are difficult to describe. It's as though what is being displayed is the underlying data, header ID, message ID, and other pieces of data, but no subject display or poster data, size, etc. A screen shot would be worth a thousand words.

Just tried downloading headers without SSL. The results, bad, were the same, so apparently SSL is not the issue. However, I believe that a few months ago I read a post with a "fix" if you were using SSL without upgrading to the beta, because of the transition to TLS(?) by the providers. Could that be causing a problem now that I am using the beta? And, if so, what is/are the correct settings?

Some additional info- It seems that when I first load the posts for a group, everything is displayed correctly, then the screen "resets" and the displayed information is all wrong as I attempted to describe above.

You can switch back to older versions. Might be an interesting experiment. My suspicion is that it'll still be messed up.

What it sounds like is some sort of data corruption problem that's only impacting you. That suggests it's something with your PC or security software. I'm not discounting a bug in Newsbin but you're the only one reporting this so far. For now, I'm assuming it's a problem with your setup and not a general problem.

Is your data folder on an internal disk?

Newsbin downloads headers and stores them on disk, then reads them back off disk and feeds them into a database. I'd say the problem could be:

1 - The server might be delivering bad data. Your experiment suggests that's not the case.

2 - The data is corrupted in transit. Some virus scanners do "man in the middle" attacks on SSL. Since the headers are compressed, they look like binary so a virus scanner/firewall might be trashing them. If you want to test this. Uninstall your V scanner and firewall, reboot then try some header downloads. You can then re-install them.

3 - There could be a problem writing them to disk.

4 - There could be a problem reading them back off the disk.

Keep in mind, at this point it's just you so I think it's unrelated to B9 (except as a new program, you might need to tell you security software to leave B9 alone). I'm just guessing though at this point. The Virus scanner thing is probably what I'd try next. It's not uncommon for them to F things up.

One more thing- For groups I haven't updated, the display is just what I would expect it to be. The problem only seems to be in updated or in groups I have been using for testing.

I only enable virus scanning for files that might be suspicious, no realtime scanning. I use a hardware firewall (router), so that is not an issue, as the ports have remained the same. I have a dedicated HDD (internal) just for Newsbin downloads and data folder.

I think I mentioned this before, but in one group, that I download from almost daily, the posts from yesterday that I know were complete, some of them are now showing as incomplete after I updated the group with B9.

I notice that there are now 5 db3 files in each group folder instead of the 3 from v6.5.

I'm getting toward the "I don't know" stage. Do you have another PC to try it on? Your comment about "looks good then looks bad" suggests you've got a mix of good and bad data. That if you scroll down enough you might run into uncorrupted data. Meaning it's not all bad. That's what your error messages suggested too.

Are you not telling me something? Normally it's at this stage that someone pulls out that they're running on a Mac or under Wine on Linux.

I'd stick to one server and disable header downloads on the other one till you solve this. All news servers have pretty much the same headers. I'd probably only download headers from Astra for now.

If the virus scanner is installed, it can still mess with data. You don't seem to want to try the experiment but, removing it and rebooting is probably what I'd next. Keep in mind once the data is corrupt there's no fixing it. You should be wiping the group between each test (right click "Post Storage/Delete stored posts").

You can re-install the older version. The download lists are incompatible but mostly everything else is.

So, is this it then? And I was so liking the quickness of B9. Some other "anomalies" I have noted:

After unRARing a file, the RARs aren't automatically removed from the download list (they are deleted from disk though).
When I use the "Remove files that no longer exist" button, the refreshed list re-sorts by earliest date, despite the fact that I had it sorted by latest date.

I have gone back to 6.56 and all my group header downloads are what they should be once I purged the corrupted groups and re-downloaded all headers. Given this, it would appear that the issue is NOT with my PC, but rather with 6.6B9.

Doesn't' explain why you're the only one having the issue. I pay attention to all trouble-reports but when I can't reproduce it, I just have to sit back and wait for others to report the same thing. I regularly download headers from multiple servers just as you seem to.

I'm not saying there isn't a problem in B9. Maybe there is. I just can't reproduce it. You don't seem to want to try running without the virus scanner so, we're sort of stuck. Weird problems like that are almost always security software. Something is stepping on the data. The fact it works with the older version isn't much of a data point because V scanners treat new versions like a new program.

I'm glad 6.56 is working for you.

You can make copies of the program files folder and simply rename them.

Then you can switch back and forth between these two versions by copying and renaming the folder.

No need to make it complicated. If you only run one instance at a time you don't have to do anything else. If you want to have a "per version" data folder you'll either have to rename the data folder each time you run or have multiple NBI files.

Apparently, unbeknownst to me, the realtime file system shield of my V scanner was turned on. I have turned it off, plus put the DataFolder in the exclusion list in the event it gets turned back on.

I have installed 6.60B9 alongside 6.56, and I am happy to report, B9 seems to be working fine now. YAY!!!

You'd probably told it to leave the data folder alone for 6.56 and not for B9. Or set 6.56 to trusted or something. There's no difference in the GZ files between 6.56 and B9. They're
completely interchangeable. The GZ files are just compressed text. The V scanners often get confused when you have compressed data because the patterns are essentially random and sometimes they don't like patterns they see.

Like I said farther up. New version = New program to most V scanners. If you told it to ignore an older version, you probably need to tell it again with a newer version.

I saw some corrupt posts like this this evening. Interesting thing is that Newsbin thought they were new but they're actually came from very old posts. By luck I saw the record number which was 79 million. The group has over 3.3 billion posts in it now meaning this corrupt data was in some of the oldest headers. I deleted them and my new posts showed back up normally.

I don't know if it was the same thing but it could have been. I'd just downloaded a bunch of older headers from Giga.

I'll keep an eye on it.
