6.60B4 has problems with marking posts as old

Postby meenich » Tue Feb 10, 2015 11:35 am

I installed 6.60B4 about 3 days ago (upgraded from 6.55), and since then have noticed that posts marked as read show up again when I reopen the group of groups. Same goes for deleted posts. I couldn't find this (mis)behavior in the known issues list, nor did there seem to be mention of it in any recent threads, so figured I'd post it.

I'm not having that problem with the current B5. I did fix "Search" so, hide old always works there now.

So, you load a group up with it set to "Hide Old" and the old ones still show up?

Thanks.

Yes - that's the exact scenario. And looking back at the age of the posts that are showing up, it correlates perfectly with when I installed B4 (3 days ago).

I also did a test, just now, where I brought up the posts in one of my groups, then "deleted" all posts, exited Newsbin, restarted it, and reloaded that group, and the exact same number of posts showed up as before the delete, when I would have expected zero or so posts, having just deleted everything in that group a minute earlier.

The only posts that seem to go away reliably are actual downloads.

This has been happening with me as well when you use the delete key - if you use shift+delete 99% of them disappear the next time you open the group.

It happens for me with both "Mark as Read" and "Delete" - i.e., using delete and shift-delete makes no difference.

Delete doesn't delete. It just tags them as old. It's a background process too so. It's possible it didn't finish by the time you exited. Shift-Delete actually deletes the posts from disk. Same thing, it needs time to work. Especially if you do a bunch of them.

6.60B4 specifically speeds up both process. Before, delete was really slow because the database wasn't being used in an optimal way. So, a massive delete might take a long time. Now with B4. it's much quicker. Both delete and shift-delete.

I'll have to think of some way to reproduce it.

Thanks, Quade. The experiment where I exited was not my normal mode of operation. I usually leave NBPro running, and am still seeing this behavior.

I assume you're talking about downloading headers. Delete doesn't work with internet search because the data isn't on your computer. "Hide Old" doesn't work in search in B4 (it does in B5).

1 - I pick a group.

2 - Load the group normally.

3 - I selected 164 of the posts listed and hit "Shift-Delete" (out of about 35,000).

4 - Newsbin prompts me with a "Delete Selected Posts" and I say yes.

5 - I then reload the group. The 164 files I shift deleted are gone.

If you do that, what happens. I'm not downloading headers in between. I reload with the "Display Age" dropdown.

Right - regular group header window, not in search.

And for some reason, I'm unable to now reproduce the shift-delete behavior, even though it was there earlier today. Will have to look at how to reproduce the shift-delete issue.

However, plain delete (Mark as read) definitely still misbehaves - I just checked:
- Loaded a group
- Came up with 43 posts
- Marked all posts as read (delete, not shift-delete)
- Quit from group
- Reloaded group
- Exact same 43 posts showed up again.

I'll have to poke around more to see how to reproduce the shift-delete misbehavior I was seeing earlier - maybe it was just a question of exiting NBPro to quickly. Anyways, I'll follow up later on that one.

Well, good news. I did find a problem in B4 with marking old. It'll be fixed in B5.
