Why are par files getting some random hex number inserted

Postby flat_beer » Tue Jan 07, 2014 6:10 am

Why are par files getting some (apparently) random hex number inserted after the first period of the file name?

For example:

almost.3CD0D84F.human.107.hdtv-lol.par2

Why is the 3CD0D84F in there?

Some groups, they post different sets but, they all have the same name. If you download them to a common folder, the pars get overwritten. The hex number, which is the PARID for the par set, prevents duplicate par files.

How do I disable Newsbin from adding of the hex numbers to PAR file names?

Hopefully there is a option or I will be returning to 6.42

the hex numbers are annoying and change how recently downloaded files show up in my file browser

how do I turn off this feature? i don't run into the trouble of par files replacing on another and if I can't turn off the alphanumeric characters I will be going back to a previous version

Sorry I missed this. You can't turn it off. As I explained it's to handle cases where morons post different files with the same PAR filenames.

If that hex number was put just before the extension it would be better. That way the pars and the files would sort together. With the current version the pars sort in a random order.

I can look into moving it. Depends on whether it breaks anything.

Please add a switch to turn this feature on and off in the options, its annoying and doesn't cause problem for everyone, I would rather have it turned off. Having the alphanumeric number would be better at the end of the file name just before the extension but I want it turned off completely. Let people have the option of having this turned on or not. Should be a option not permanently coded in so its on.

I'll think about it.

In 6.60, I've moved it to the end and if you disable autopar, removed it altogether.

It's kind of early alpha right now. 6.55, a minor bug fix for 6.54 will probably be out this week. Maybe first beta in a week or 2.

Do you run without autopar? If yes, I might be able to sneak it into 6.55.

Ok, I'll look into it then. It's pretty trivial to not change the par if autopar is disabled

Sorry to hijack a thread, but it's a bit related to an old post I made when v6.50 was released.

I understand WHY you've added the hex number (due to par2 files being posted with the same names); but if a user sets Newsbin to download to a folder named for the NZB, isn't this a non-issue with the par2 files having the same name? If that is true, then couldn't the hex number be automatically disabled when a user checks the box to d/l to a folder named after the NZB? Autopar should run according to where the par2 files are, correct? If so, this seems like d/l to different folders wouldn't "confuse" Autopar and makes the hex numbers unnecessary.

Using v6.42 I'm d/l'ing to folders named after the NZB file and many of the par2 files are named the same (0.par2, 1.par2, 2.par2) across hundreds of different posts and I'm not having issues with my par2s working nor with Autopar working. However, that all changed for me once the hex numbers were added in v6.50.

I'd like to have either of the following added:

If user sets to d/l to a folder named after NZB, automatically shut off the addition of the hex number to par2 files (if my assumption in first paragraph above is correct).

OR

Like the OP requested, add a setting to turn on/off hex number additions to par2 files.

What's the problem with the hex number? It has no impact on Newsbin's ability to repair.

The reason I don't like the hex numbers is because it changes where the par files sorted in the folder, 9 times out of 10 the par files always followed what ever was downloaded and I could easily tell what had par files and what didn't, now with the hex numbers par files are always getting grouped together for the most part and it makes things difficult. I'd just like a setting to turn the hex number on or off. For those that want them they can have them on and people like me can turn them off. That's just my 2 cents on why I don't like them

I got it.

I fixed that in 6.60. I moved the number to right before the "vol" so, the files sort with the rars now.

Any chance on putting in a option to shut the hex numbers completely?

I'd rather not but, I don't feel strongly about it. I can think about it.

Since I've already fixed your specific issue with the sorting, does it really matter? Reading your comments suggests you don't use autopar anyway. In 6.60 if autopar is disabled, the hex numbers are suppressed.

I see that 6.60 is currently beta, just curious if you have a time frame for when it will be released "Gold"

RC1 should be up tomorrow. Then it's just a matter of finding and purging any bugs people discover. Then release.
