Unrar with original date?

Postby astrax » Tue Sep 02, 2014 3:22 pm

Hi,
I recently switched to 6.53 and noticed something, which NB didn't do before:
Until now the file(s) from an archive got the curent date, when it was unrared/written to disk. Not the original date it was packed. But now NB extracts the files with their original date. I currently downloaded a bunch of files, which I thought vanished, but they were just somewhere among the other files in the folder. Rather annoying when you have a bunch files that belong together somehow.

I found it more convenient the old way, since you wouldn't have to search for the last unpacked files. You just sorted them by date.
Any explanation or reason for this behaviour?

THX

*edit
Something just came to my mind: could this be "fixed" with the new scripting option (which I haven't looked into, or know much about)? Or maybe it's because of the scripting option?

viewtopic.php?f=44&t=30318&hilit=KeepFilestamp

"KeepFileStamp=0"

Will make it act like the older version default. Meaning not setting the timestamp. What's changed is that this now defaults to true.

Dex tested this the other day.

So, yeah, that didn't work...
Added it to the [AutoRar) portion, saved the file, checked the file if it has been saved. Opened NB, added some older files to the list (which was empty) - got the same result: still unRARed with the old date, not todays.
Do I maybe have to purge anything? Is there maybe another entry in this 6.53 version that needs to be set?
Thanks!

Dex verified this for me the other day. I'll have to try it myself.

1 - You might want to make sure you don't have more than one NBI. "File Save/As" Will show you the folder and name of the current NBI.

2 - Which timestamp are you looking at? Each file has 3.

Hi,
yes, there's been another NBI in the folder, but that was an older backup.

I use the "date of change" (german "Änderungsdatum"), not "modification date" (these may be called something similar in your english version) to sort files by date in a folder in Windows Explorer. That way I can see, which ones have been unrared last.

Look at the other time stamps. If I remember correctly, one time stamp will have today's date and one of the others will still have the old date

I'll try to verify it today.

nope, I've noticed this as well since the last update, and it's kinda frustrating, actually.
in a dir of a few hundred files, the only, simple way to search was by the download date.
any chance that if I installed an older version, this would return to the way it was?
thanks

yes, this summarizes the "dilemma".

That's correct. A way around this, or to be able to sort them as I'm used to, would be changing/adding the category by which the files are sorted. Still, I'd prefer the "old" way ;)

I've tested this and I can't see what you guys are reporting. I wonder if you have windows explorer configured to sort on a different date or something? In looking at files with With KeepFilestamp=1 (keep current date), it gives me Created, Modified, and Accessed dates of the current date. When I tested with KeepFilestamp=0, I got a Created and Accessed date of today but the Modified date matched the date of the file in the RAR archive.

So using the same data points from above, tell me what you are getting that is different and maybe we can figure out what's going on.

Thanks for the reply, Dexter.

I used to sort files by Modified (which is also the standard setting, I guess). Unrared files used to have the current date, even though they may have been RAR'ed two years ago or something.
This does not work anymore. You now have to sort by Created. I never use(d) Accessed.

Wether I have the KeepFilestamp set to 0 or 1 makes no difference to the Created date though. It's always the current date. Modified is always the original date of the file. NB didn't behave like that before (or at least the version I used).

May this have something to do with having to add the KeepFilestamp entry in the first place?

Are you sure you have the KeepFilestamp setting in the correct section of the nbi? Changing that should change the Modified date. It needs to be in the [AutoRAR] section.

I'm not sure that Newsbin ever changed the Created date, I thought it was always the current date. You are saying older versions would set the Created date to the date of the file in the RAR archive?

Dex is correct, Unrar only ever changed one of the timestamps.

Re: Unrar with original date?

Yes, that what I meant by
Modified is always the original date of the file

It seems that that's the date, that NB doesn't affect.

Entry is in the AutoRAR section. This is what it looks like in my NBI:
[AutoRAR]
AggressiveAssembly=1
AutoDecode=1
AutoDelete=1
AutoFolder=0
AutoScratch=0
DecodePath=d:\EXTRACT\$(GROUP)\
DisableAutoPAR=0
FolderPrefix=0
KeepFilestamp=0
PathOverride=1
PausePARS=1
RemovePerfect=0
UseFilter=0
UseRecycle=1

Yesterday I randomly downloaded from a.b.test. This is what it looks like, unRARed in the folder (underlined green is the date I usually sort things by "modified", red is "created"):
Image
Up until recently all unRARed files had the underlined green, current date.

You want KeepFilestamp=1 for it to keep the current date. Otherwise it uses the file date from the rar archive.

I know, but like I stated already - it does not work for me, whether I set it to 0 or 1. The result is the same.
The downloads in the screenshot were made with both settings... I can try it again, but I fear the outcome will be the same.

Yes, try it again. Make sure Newsbin is closed when you edit the .nbi file. If Newsbin is open, it will not see the change and will actually revert to whatever it was before when you close Newsbin.

And yes, the setting was saved (NB was closed during the edit). It still says 1.

If you are willing to send me your .nbi file I can try a download using your exact configuration and see what's going on. You can strip your news server info if you want and I'll plug mine in. Keep everything else the same in case you have some combination of settings that is circumventing the KeepFilestamp setting. You can send it to me through ts at newsbin dot com

has this been fixed yet? it's been driving me nuts for two months now.
Is there an older version of NB you can direct to me to which I could use that does NOT use the original RAR date, but instead uses the download/unrar date?

I use Total Commander to sort/manage files, and the recent NB, even with the keeptimestamp=1 edit, still stores files with the original packing date. When those dates are several years old, it's a real PITA.

thanks

It's fixed in 6.54. KeepFilestamp=0 will use the current time instead of keeping the timestamp from the rar archive.

It's about to be released as the production version but this one is close enough: http://www.newsbin.com/beta.php
