How soon should "hide old" take affect?

Postby eclapwannabe » Sat Aug 02, 2014 12:25 pm

My expectations are that it would be within the same time frame that I am downloading the chunks
but rarely is that they case.

It seems to be working arbitrarily.

I suspect that there is some internal rule that has to be followed and I am not following it

TIA for any help in this matter.

I was locked out of the forum for about six months because I forgot my old password and the system
generated a new password. I must have exceeded the amount of times that I can try to get into the forum because even with the "new password" it still would not let me in. So I tried about 2 days ago
the "new password" and it finally let me in.

If you have it set to automatically "hide old" it happens when you load the group. The group is loaded then the posts on disk are set to "Old" assuming you're using headers.

So the only way that I will noticed that the downloaded files have changed status is to quit the group then reopen the group

If you load a group and you see green things. That means some are new.

If you have it set to automatically make things old, the files on disk are then old.

You can also select the green files, then hit the delete button to make them "Old".

I'm not clear how Newsbin is supposed to know you want a currently visible list of files to become "old" without you actually doing something.

I must be very confused here.

I have post that are available to be D/L. In NBP these post show a background color as green. I interpret
those post as unread. So I choose one or more post to be d/l to a folder. After d/l the background color turns white which would mean to me that they have been "read" or "old".

Are you telling me that NBP cannot tell by the color change that the post are "old". I have to manually
mark these as "old" before NBP notices the changes?

You just seemed to describe Newsbin setting a post "Old" so, maybe I don't know what you're asking for.

You asked how long it takes to mark something old. From your own description it seems to be instantaneous, green, then not green. That being the case, I'm not clear what you're looking for. What are you expecting "turning old" to do?

I give up I guess I will never understand this issue. I think I do a pretty good description of what I want to accomplish. I will just fiddle with nbp myself and maybe I can make it work.

Okay I did a little experiment. I chose a single article to download. Closed the group out. Came back to that group and found that hiding the old or read article works. So that answers my original question. NBP does not recognize that the article or post is read or old until the system is updated by a closing of the group.

No need to reply I have my answer this time

Maybe it's a language barrier thing but, I finally think I know what you're asking for.

You don't really care about when something is old or new. The real question I think you're asking is:

"When does newsbin HIDE old posts when I have "Hide Old" set and I download a file".

Or maybe (though I'm still just guessing):

"Why doesn't newsbin immediately hide a post when it becomes old".

So, I don't think the becoming old part is as important as "hiding the old post".

I re-read your posts, I don't see anything about hiding the posts so, this is just guess work. I asked what you expected to happen and you didn't answer.

yes at what point does nbp hide old post or read post or the downloaded post.

And I have my answer which is that it only happens when a new session starts or when I close out the
newsgroup then re-initialize the group.

It is a lot like statement analysis. I have my internal dictionary and you have your internal dictionary.
You designed the program so you think in terms of how you set the program up. I think in terms of as a
user of the program and will forever be out of the loop.

Thanks for your input

You can just re-apply "hide old" too. Click the dropdown and select "Hide Old" again. Any time Newsbin has to re-gen the list. Like applying a different size filter, it'll re-create the list and remove the "olds".
