'Read posts' not always working, 6.53rc3...

Postby mesadude » Sat Aug 09, 2014 10:25 pm

I've noticed that with the last couple of versions, when I right click to invoke 'read posts' on some small posts, they don't always open. The ones I'm clicking on are typically just short text posts, and they used to always open. Any clues? Thanks, Mesa.

I have seen the same. The posts are usually 1.2k or smaller.

Noticed this about 3 days ago when using my Windows tablet (running NB 6.52B6). I since upgraded it to NB 6.53RC4 and see the same thing. Tried "Read Post Body" on two files - one opened in notepad, the other just showed up on the "Downloading Files" tab then disappeared without opening notepad (never did show on the "Files List" tab or the Failed Files" tab or appear in the "Read Posts" folder).

I believe that means what it says. That the server reports it has the post but, there's no data. Someone else commented that it's about the same as a 430 but, because it's not a 430, Newsbin doesn't engage any other servers. I suppose I could look into making it always try the other server even when there's no error.

I just retested and see basically the same error as mesadude. Sometimes the poster puts his entire message in the subject (maybe just says 'Thanks' or 'got it') then leaves the body of the post blank.

I thought that was the issue too but, a user on IRC claims that switching servers made something show up so, I'm not clear if that's all there is to it. The question is whether I should treat an empty body as an error to be tried on another server or not. Currently it's "Not".

These "bodiless" txt files use to open in Notepad - now they just disappear from the download list. Not a big deal, I'll just check the log tab when one disappears (don't Ctrl-R files very often).

The new Ctrl-R is designed to pull information from compacted sets now. It'll pull any NFOs. the first PAR2 and a chunk of the first rar and show you what it find.

I'll have to re-examine the empty body stuff.

[17:48:15] HIGH astraweb Post has an empty body. This might mean it's been removed due to DMCA action :<2014081207470033339-Nada@punditcom> REQ: America's Wild West - Ken Burns

Read Post Body has been troublesome for about 6 months. Latest version 6.53RC4 3309. and last version 3298 I could not read anything (or download) that did not have a proper extension, like .nfo or .txt

Usually I could not read my own posts unless I replied with the subject line changed.

Even if there was no text in the body, it should show header information.

Also looks like all prior read posts were deleted from the NewsBin Data directory "Read Posts".

On my WinXP 64 bit system, they used to open in WordPad.
---
Edit
Read Post Body completely failed on 6.53RC4 3298.
Also, I could not find how I set NewsBin to use WordPad instead of NotePad, ... it could be that my version of WordPad requires an extension - Read Post Body does work fine with a .txt extension "

"Re: REQ: <some shit ending in text>"
downloaded OK, could be read with Read Post Body including headers, and does show up in NewsBin Data directory "Read Posts".

Build 3199

Interesting Read Post Body

Switched from WinXP to Win7. Now I get "Usenet Search Error" window that tells me "Newsbin Usenet Search Disabled"

With WinXP I could read post body of anything that had an extension in the subject line (.txt .nfo).

Yes, I could still have something messed up with Win7 running Newsbin.

Sounds like you're running Newsbin unregistered on the new OS. You need to register for search to work (Register and restart Newsbin).

Build 3311

Now trying new Win7 installation on new SSD. ie, a clean new computer installation.

Newsbin unregistered until I can re-connect some hard drives.

Read Post Body, apparently does not work if there is no body to the message. Newsbin adds message to Download Files, apparently downloads (reads) the message, then removes from Download Files window.

Read Post Body, apparently does work if there is a body to the message.

"[17:14:20] HIGH news.astraweb.com Post has an empty body. This might mean it's been removed due to DMCA action :<2obqu91qrmqdlun6n0smk740qpt9on92vf@4ax.com> Thanks for the repost! A great series, nice to see it again."

Since Newsbin doesn't read the message, can not tell for sure that there is no body.

I thought Newsbin would at least show the message header details, regardless of message body or not.

Have no idea why, as in my prior post here, Newsbin displayed "Usenet Search Error" window on old system.

Thanks Quade. No message body really should display at least the message header information and not generate an error. Otherwise the confusion will persist.

Forte Agent reads the messages. Newsbin does not. Newsbin mostly does nothing except give that "No Message Body" error. So, it is either run Forte Agent or continue to have someone running Forte Agent relay messages to people running Newsbin. Thought Newsbin was failing because the failed messages were small. But here are two examples, slightly different, where the actual text is quite large.

Trouble reading messages. Messages starts "Subject: Sample my posts"

Please display the "Read Post Body" message header instead of simply ignoring the command and generating the "DMCA" error. If you display the message header then it is very likely that the actual message body will also be displayed.

There is no way to read the shorter messages with Newsbin. Can not even download them as a file. I have to use Forte Agent to read them.

Sometimes all I want to do is look at the message header to see what news server someone is using. It seems that your intent is to not display posts that Newsbin "thinks" has no message body.

There are many other issues with "Read Post Body", but as a start, the "DMCA" error should never be generated as there is always something there that can be displayed.

Quade, if you want a list of "Read Post Body" issues, then I can list them. But first these "DMCA" errors have to stop. There are message headers and there are message bodies and I should not have to use Forte Agent. Perhaps you can not reproduce these issues running 1000 mbps between two desktop computers. In any event, the issues do exist at 1 mbps over my internet links - they are consistent and reproduced every time. I tend to think that either I am the only one who sees these issues or the only one who still reports them.

Ran into this again yesterday. I just gave up on the post - it wasn't worth opening Agent and downloading headers again to read it.

Postby fliptron » Thu Oct 16, 2014 9:19 am

I'm seeing this problem too, starting with 6.53RC3. My contribution to the discussion:

I'm running 6.53RC3 build 3305
System is W7-Pro 64

When I click ctrl-R on a small (non binary) post, it shows up in the Downloading Files tab for a short while
then disappears.

It does not show up in the Files List tab (I don't think it ever did in prior version, and don't think it should)

The text editor/viewer that used to start up to show the content of the file does not do that anymore.

I went searching, and found that the message header and body was actually being downloaded and placed
in C:\Users\my_name\AppData\Local\Newsbin\Read Posts

So for me, the post is downloaded, but not displayed.
I checked in Newsbin.nbi for DisplayReadPosts but there was no such entry.

For giggles, I exited Newsbin, and added DisplayReadPosts=1 to the settings section, after DisplayAge=60
I restarted Newsbin, but it still does not display the file.

So.... for now, I can keep the directory C:\Users\my_name\AppData\Local\Newsbin\Read Posts open
in an file explorer window, click ctrl-R in NB , then when file shows up, double click it in the explorer
window to read it.

Build 3322
"- Fix Read Post Body to show header text if there is no body data - specifically (0/1) posts."

Thanks Quade. Read Post Body works again. By displaying the message headers, it now also displays the message too.

Next problem...
When I post a message, I have to include line breaks as in "-" between lines so I can read my own messages without it being lumped into one big mass of text. Could be the problem is caused when I post by typing in the message box.

Example:
===========================================================================
I did not think that I could do it.
-
Did not oxxur to me to generate extra pars for Hoos. A nice solution.
-
So, please Spike, a brief explanation as to how you did it. Thanks.
==========================================================================

My default .txt reader is Wordpad, and NewsBin may be set up for NotePad, the difference being how CR and LF are displayed for newline. Also note that Wordpad (Win7) will only allow one FileName.txt in a given directory - it does not allow two files with the same name. Not sure if you are using NotePad and trying to append text or something like that. Since (AppData\Local\Newsbin\Read Posts) uses the message subject line to generate FileName.txt, if I have Wordpad open with FileName.txt, Newsbin can not Read Post Body for another and different post that uses the same subject header.

Read Post Body double headers still happens in Build 3322, though at least now the message text is alo displayed instead of the "DMCA"error...

Build 3322

Another thought...

Use a message counter for every message placed in (AppData\Local\Newsbin\Read Posts). Preceed each new FileName.txt with an incremented message number like:

001FileName.txt
002FileName.txt
003FileName.txt

That may clear up a lot of Read Post Body problems, though it could also cause new problems. Added benefit is missing messages with stick out in (AppData\Local\Newsbin\Read Posts) when sorted by filename. Do not auto delete messages except during counter modulo roll-over, though the odds of having the same xxxFileName.txt in a thousand messages is very small and perhaps after a thousand messages, the oldest should be auto-deleted anyway.
