Corrupt database?

Postby mankind99uk » Tue Jul 01, 2014 8:37 pm

Today when I was running Newsbin, I kept getting windows messages saying that the C drive was full, even though I knew there was approx 45GB of unused space.
I shut down Newsbin but the messages kept occurring. I rebooted but I was still being informed that the C drive was full.
I started Newsbin and a message came up saying "Load the Download list", this stayed for a few minutes before disappearing and headers downloaded. Also the C drive full messages stopped and displayed the correct size in Windows explorer. I think Newsbin triggered these full drive warnings.
Now everytime I start Newsbin I get the same "Load the Download list", even though there is nothing to download.
Can I delete files in the Data folder so they can be recreated to sort this out? If so which ones?

There is also a Logfile.txt file in the Data folder that increases in size very fast. I noticed that it grew to 6GB in a few minutes. Is there any way to stop this?

I'm running version 6.51

If the logfile grows like that, it typically means a problem with one of your groups and the logfile is filling with error messages.

I think you have a corrupt group and it's caused all of these issues.

1 - Start Newsbin, then quickly exit. Look in the log file for which group is failing. Then delete it from the "Spool_V6" folder. Likely this corrupt group and the growing log file are why you're running out of disk space.

2 - Delete the downloads.db3 in the data folder. It's probably corrupt.

Start and run. If the log file grows again, rinse and repeat till the logfile stops growing.

From the logfile I found the problem group, I deleted it from the "Spool_V6" folder and also the downloads.db3 in the data folder.
I restarted Newsbin and headers downloaded but the logfile is still growing.
These are some of the entries in the logfile:
[10:38:45] HIGH PAR Pausing: Enabled
[10:38:45] HIGH Par2Repair - Multi-core 1.5
[10:38:45] HIGH MessageId Filter: Disabled
[10:38:46] DEBUG DbWorker: Db Update Started5: C:\Users\***\AppData\Local\NewsBin\Import\alt.binaries.town-Newsgroupdirect (NL)-2179124622-2180124622.gz
[10:38:46] DEBUG DbWorker: Db File Open Failed: C:\Users\***\AppData\Local\NewsBin\Import\alt.binaries.town-Newsgroupdirect (NL)-2179124622-2180124622.gz
[10:38:46] DEBUG DbWorker: Db Update Started5: C:\Users\***\AppData\Local\NewsBin\Import\alt.binaries.town-Newsgroupdirect (NL)-2179124622-2180124622.gz
[10:38:46] DEBUG DbWorker: Db File Open Failed: C:\Users\***\AppData\Local\NewsBin\Import\alt.binaries.town-Newsgroupdirect (NL)-2179124622-2180124622.gz

I was using Newsgroupdirect to download headers but after seeing it in the logfile I disabled header download.
I, again, deleted the group and the downloads.db3, restarted Newsbin and headers downloaded from Giganews & Astraweb but the logfile is still growing and showing the same entries. It grew to 2GB in a few seconds!

I've now done this 4 times with no change.

Now the "Load the download list" message has returned.

This is the first time I've ever seen this problem.

You should be able to find that GZ file in the data folder and delete it too. That's the next step.

The "Load the Download" list thing will always show it. I think you notice it because the log file writing it so intensive.

Thanks Quade, that seems to have sorted out the big logfile - its just 129KB now.
