NB not stopping on exit 6.52 beta 3

Postby syshog » Fri May 16, 2014 2:05 am

I have a problem with Newsbin not closing completely out on exit the process stays open after the window disappears. I'm using version 6.52 beta 3 64bit on windows 7 64bit. When I go to the process tab in task manager it shows Newsbin still open with a few k of memory being used and taskmanager will not let me end task on Newsbin. According to resource manager Newsbin is not writing any data to disk and I have to reboot to get rid of Newsbin. The logging tab shows nothing when I restart the program. I have headers I want to retain on not lose. What's the best way to go about this and not lose my headers?

xeon system with 128GB+ of ram and a lot of storage. I don't update my sig much.

Depending on how many headers you download and the infrastructure of your disk IO, newsbin can need a fair bit of time to insert them into the database. Look at the status bar on the bottom, where you have a couple of numbers separated by a slash - if there's a number other than zero in brackets after that, that is how many spools are still to be processed. If it's zero, then that's not the issue. Things like other disk processes, network or USB drives or even just a slow, fragmented or error-heavy drive can make this slower. Some people grab 8 or 9 figures worth of headers at a shot, especially in picture or spammy groups - this will take a while.

Alternatively, some aggressive antivirus can interfere with the proper behaviour of newsbin - try disabling those and see if that makes a difference.

The fact you can't kill it in task manager is interesting. It suggests it told Windows to do something and that this command never returned. So basically Newsbin is stuck inside windows.

I'm unclear what headers you're losing. Are you losing download list entries or something?

This doesn't seem to be a general problem in B3 so, I'm not sure what the problem is.

Are you referring the cache value at the bottom of newsbin? Is there a way to force sync the chunk use state cache after the download queue empties? I'm using a raid 10 setup on an areca 1882 controller, I use the drive just for newsbin and storage. My anti virus is purposely setup to not scan or protect the newsbin folder and sub folders. The resource monitor shows that newsbin it not writing to disk. When I close it with an empty download window the result is the same, the window disappears and the process hangs open. I will try to take a screenshot of the window before I close it and what follows.

I'm not losing data, the problem is the newsbin process just fails to unload completely from memory. I'll take some screenshots later. Something may already be corrupt though.

OK I think I may have found the problem. I had 6GB worth of gz files in the import folder and I deleted them newsbin now terminates like it's suppose to. the cache value in parentheses read (243) prior to me deleting those files. I before I restarted newsbin I moved the gz files out and then started up NB. I did a quick header download of about 60 groups the number went to (0) when the download queue cleared and newsbin terminated correctly. I had remembered something quade said about the last version not deleting those files.. Thank you guys for pointing me in the right direction.

You description is pretty clear. I think it sounds like there's a problem in windows itself. Not being able to kill something in task manager, really suggests internal windows problem. Perhaps security software related. There should never be anything you can't kill. That's kind of why I'm at a lose. I've never had that happen before.

Edit: Those GZ files being removed means you've missing a decent number of headers in your groups now.

OK I can redownload the headers for the two groups it stalled on. I have a few backups of windows I can restore to see if I have the problems there. I was just playing around with Newsbin and I noticed the cache level in the parenthes dropping slowly with an empty download list (56) (36) (33). The drives are not being accessed because they are 7200pm and loud when data it being written. Is there a way to create a manual flush of the cache?
