Can't delete posts

Postby ricer » Mon Jan 06, 2014 3:49 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to follow groups with huge # of headers but since I don't want to see (and store) each time millions of headers I download 10 Mio Headers, check if there is something interesting. As soon as I've checked/download what I want, I delete the posts, close the group and the next time I download the next 10 Mio Headers.

BUT this works only a couple of times (2-3 times) and after that I can delete the posts (I always try too keep a few first and last posted headers) but as soon as I reopen the group ALL recently deleted headers are back and there is no way to delete any posts. Sometimes it helps to try several times and try to keep more headers.

Is this "normal" or is it a bug? I've been using 6.42 first, after that used the 6.5 Betas and now I'm using the final 6.5

How are you doing this 10 million thing? Let it download 10 million and then remove the download item from the list?

I assume you're doing "Shift-Delete" on the posts you're deleting?

Thanks for answering. :)

When I add a group, I initially download the past 2 days. After checking the posts, I delete all unwanted posts via "Posts --> Delete Posts", close the group, and with Right-Click on the group (in the group list tab) I choose "Download Special --> Download 10.000.000 older posts".

When I download all headers in some groups and get something like 120.000 posts, I am not even able to delete a single post because as soon as I reopen the group all posts are still there.

I have the same problem and that has been working before. I suppose I can't revert to a version before V6.5?

Ulwivst, are you doing this same thing? I delete posts all the time with no issue. I'm thinking the problem isn't the deletion but, that when you walk backwards through the group, it's re-downloading the headers you already deleted.

You can install and run any version you wish.

I have tried to delete the entire group and start from scratch, but the same thing occur. I'm certainly doing something wrong, but I can't figure it out. I've done the same procedure for years, but after installing 6.5 this phenomena has showed up.

So, you are or aren't using the same technique as Ricer?

I'm not having any issues deleting so, I'm trying to figure out what you're doing differently than I am.

Sorry for the confusion. I start with subcribing to a new group. I then initially right-click on the group in groups list and choose "Download all headers" even if there are 10.000.000 posts in group. After that it automatically download the latest headers every time I opening the group again.

Ok, so, that's the same way I do it.

I use a combination of "Delete all Posts by Poster" and I select posts and hit "Shift-Delete" to delete them. You're saying when you "Shift-Delete" the posts, you, then reload the group, they come back?

1 - Load up a group. Select the top 20 posts. Hit "Shift-Delete". They should vanish.

2 - Where it says "Display Age" click that, drop the list and then select "Display Age". This will reload the group.

3 - Are the files you deleted still gone or do they come back?

I have selected top 20 posts and hit "Shift-Delete". They vanish and the header counter on list tab subtract 20, so long it's ok. Then I reload the group and the 20 popup again. I also did the same and quit Newsbin. Still there.

Whenever I download all headers with 6.5 or 6.51b I have huge problems deleting posts with shift-delete because they constantly reappear when I close and open the group again. I even deleted the complete newsbin folder and started from scratch and still the same problem with 6.5x.

With 6.42 everything works fine. Not a single problem so far.

I have to agree with ricer, since I have the same experience after upgrading to 6.5 and 6.51b2. I have used the same workflow for many years now and never failed until recently.

I have found exactly the same problem with 6.50 - deleted tons of spam with shift+delete, and it keeps reappearing.
I have now reverted to 6.42 until this issue is fixed

same here i select to delete all messages watch it go to 0. sure enough i click on it again they are there again. the only way to get rid of them is doing that same times 4 or 5 times then if finally deletes them. it works for me but still a little aggravating. just a little note seems like when its over a 1000 messages it will not delete them then first few time like i said above. i just did a 500 message group and it delete them all the first time. so maybe something to do with 1000 or more message

Hmm over 1000? That's a good clue.

Dex and I are trying to figure out why it's not working for some people.

I was working on this today. I found a performance issue that I believe I've solved. I think what was happening is that when you deleted a bunch, it never finished so, all marking and deleting after that got backlogged. I'd say it's 10 times faster now.

The new code will be in the next beta.
