Version 6.51 Beta 3 Available...

Postby dexter » Mon Jan 20, 2014 4:48 pm

Minor changes to unrar handling.

  • RAR Passwords: Now adds a password when you leave the dialog even if the add button isn't clicked.
  • Manual unrar from the right-click menu in the download list now uses the configured unrar path.
The download link for 6.51 Beta 3 is on the Newsbin Beta Page.

Latest Beta.

After downloading headers and clicking on show posts the group tab is loading all the posts for the Display age setting. i.e. my display age is set to 1 day so it loads the last 24 hours of headers. After I sort out the posts - deleting what I don't want and downloading what I do want I shut NB down.

On start up a few hours later and after updating the headers again, the group tab loads 24 hours of headers again and any posts I have already downloaded are shown as new posts and if I click on them they will re-download - they are not being picked up as duplicates or as already downloaded.

How much "overlap" do you have set for this server?

Is it still importing headers? (Number in parens down near the cache line).

Several reports of deletes not happening. Dex thinks it's because the header import is stalling the delete. Can only have one thing writing to the database at a time.

I use 3 servers - Easynews both US and Europe, and Virginmedia with the the overlap set to 5.

I always wait for the cache to go to 200/200(0) before looking at the posts.

This happened a lot with 6.5 betas up until the last couple of betas when it stopped happening. I'm fairly sure it was ok with 6.51 Beta1&2 but has started happening again with Beta 3.

Do you want me to try the earlier Betas to see when it actually started again?

You can but, I'm not sure what it would tell us. It's working for me so, I'm wondering if there's database corruption or something. Let me think about it some.

The thing that adds the signatures is the same thing that does the deletes so, I'm thinking something is causing it to stall out. As an experiment, you could exit Newsbin, then move the signature.db3 out of the data folder. Then start and try again. See if it works. If it does then something's up with the signature file.

As for the waiting thing. I never wait for the feed to finish. If you load the groups up, it'll actually prioritize the import for the currently visible tab. It's the delete that might stall because only one thing can write to the database at a time. Multiple things can read, even while it's importing.

I did another header download about an hour ago and when I viewed the various groups there were only a few posts that were older than the last time I updated the headers(about 5 hours previously). There seems to be more instances in the larger groups/GOGs than the smaller ones.

I'll move the signature.db3 before I use NB when I update again in the morning - about 11 hours between updates.

I moved the signature db3 and updated after 11 hours and again after 5 hours and the headers were all "new" with no posts I had already downloaded showing up as new.

Signature.db3 must have been compromised.

Thanks

Hmm that's not good. I mean the information is good but, it's not good the signature file was damaged.

I don't know if another problem I mentioned a while ago, and is still happening, is somehow connected.

If a group has a lot of posts and you right click on a poster and click on 'delete all posts from poster' they all disappear. If you then go up to the filter box and eg put jpg and then delete all those posts - when you click on the clear filter box button ( the radioactive button) then some if not all of the posts you deleted with the delete poster option reappear.

Again if I open a post list after a header update, posts I have already downloaded from a previous session sometimes appear even though they are marked as downloaded (whitened out) . I always have the 'Hide Old' option checked but it will take several clicks on the clear filter button before they disappear and in between clicks other headers appear and disappear.

If I am cleaning up a group list I have to use the filter box options first before using the right click options, otherwise I get deleted posts reappearing.

This would seem to me that the delete info isn't getting written to the data bases - I don't know I'm only guessing.

How do I turn off compact mode in this version (maybe all versions of 6.5)? Specifically, I'm trying to see all small files, even those within a compacted list.

Can't. It's how they're stored in the DB.

You can select some number and hit the right arrow to expand them though.

Are you coming from version 5 or something? I'm working on a method to probe the obscure files, find the filename and add them to the display so people won't have to manually dig through these files.

I was previously using 6.42 which worked fine for what I was doing. I could filter out all files over 50k and then select all the obscure files, see what they contained, and then go from there. Is it possible to go back to 6.42 without re-downloading all the headers?

6.42 and 6.50 use the same header format. Apparently, I have no idea what you were describing then.

I think I get it. 6.42 didn't know how to compact obscure file formats but, 6.50 does. Yeah, you can revert if you want to. The headers you already downloaded are already compacted but, any new headers you download will be stored in the 6.42 way.
