Performance drop 6.50 Final

Postby magician1962 » Sun Dec 15, 2013 6:10 am

I am not sure exactly when, but it is recent a little over 1 month ago, there has been a drop in performance when autopar enabled.
This was just prior to a complete system wipe and new installation

Before Newsbin would happily run at 111MB and download and autopar/unrar.

Now I am seeing cache drop to 0/1500, newsbin becomes unresponsive and so does the whole computer, average speed 50-60MB

I7-920
12GB ram
Processor is rarely hitting 25% Newsbin is on average using 6% and using about 2GB ram
In the older versions I remember 4GB+ being used

Any thoughts

Doesn't sounds like a performance issue as such. It sounds like disk IO just quits. I'd un-install all non-Microsoft security software, reboot then test some downloads. Then you can install the security software one at a time till you figure out the cause.

Are you downloading to an internal drive?

Downloading to a separate Internal 2TB drive, with plenty of spare space.

Norton is on the machine, but it's the same version, baring updates that was installed on the old drive before it got formatted, and windows and everything else installed.
Have already turned Norton off for the download drive, with no effect.

All runs fine till the cache drops too far then everything slows.

Drive has less than 5% fragmentation

Interesting to note. Just started Newsbin by opening an NZB. The toolbar button was half green, the single file transfer running at 90+MB and it was over 20 seconds before the file appeared in the download window.
(Though a clue to this maybe that the Files list had over 270000 files in it - Have now turned off Save Files List)

If I turn off Autopar, speed stays at 111MB with little variation, so it would appear to relate to the Autopar / unpack process.

Will give a proper test in the morning when I do my main download.

Done some experimenting, and have seen an improved performance, but not sure why.

My cache was set to 1500
Now set to 500, though I still get 0/500 (0) it doesn't seem for as long,

I am now getting about 30GB an hour download, compared to the 5-10GB I was getting before the settings change

I have not seen any Not responding today, which when it did happen sometimes caused the whole system to be non responsive. processor is barely 20% ram 25%

To see if I could spot anything during my experiments I installed Process Lasso. Before the changes Newsbin was being restrained a lot, now, nothing.

The change seems to have taken place between 6.42 and 6.5, though I can not be 100% sure.

At least now it is working well

If it comes back, Norton is your man. It's one of the nasty ones and the update status is about as relevant as it gets. You'll save yourself a lot of pain by completely removing it from the loop and re-evaluating.

Have to say, I have seen comments on Norton over the years causing problems with Newsbin, and even on the betas, I have not encountered any issues.
Though it is usually one of the first options I look at when there is a problem, just in case.
