Have lost all my groups and articles in 6.42

Before you yell at me, yes, I know there is a new version, but I figured it would make more sense to get 6.42 working again, before I add a new level of complications.

Been using V6.42 for quite a while, no problems. Then last night, opened it, and nothing was there but 4 files waiting to download.

Any ideas what I could have possibly done? I went to <options> and opened the Data Folder - and everything was there. Or - at least it appears that everything is there. I looked at the newsbin.nbi - paths appear to be correct. Clicked on newsbin.nbi, but that only got me back to where I started - the program running, but no servers selected, no groups, no headers, and just the same 4 files waiting to download.

Tell me its something stupid, silly and easy.

well - I fixed it by loading a backup nbi.

still curious what went wrong - so I don't do it again.
