Passworded Unrar fails in many cases

Hey Guys,

I upgraded to V6.5 yesterday. Since that time NB does not unrar passworded rars anymore. It makes no difference if i add the Password before or after the download. Every time i get the following error:

I've read a similar post about the same problem with B17 which should have been fixed by B18 but I still have this problem with the release version (Build 3126).

We have a few other reports like this that we are tracking. An example would be great. We'd like to get a fix to this and some other small issues that have come up into a 6.51 release fairly soon.

Just wondering if this is the same problem I've been seeing recently. The unrar doesn't work and if you look at the properties of the file, every part is shown corrupted. But a manual PAR check shows all files complete and it can be manually unrar'ed. I'll see if I can get a small example (all of my downloads are usually huge).

1 - 6.51B1 has some fixes for both detecting passworded files and for finding the password for files you have passwords for.

2 - Bruce, it seems unlikely to be related to your issue. Sounds like the repair succeeds and somewhere between the repair and Newsbin knowing it succeeds, something is missing. Just a guess mind you. Seen similar reports from people running "Norton" though.

Don't run Norton, only MSE. It just seems odd that every part is incomplete, like the post has been taken down. And it's only been happening the last few betas. I'll try to get more details for you. Thanks for getting back.

You understand that I do a decent amount of downloading myself and see nothing like that. It's rare that I have to repair anything and rare that a download doesn't work.

I'd suggest watching the download carefully, click the plus icon so you can see the actual files and look for red or black bars. These days anything over 800-900 days old is a crapshoot.

I will do that, but I should add that NB doesn't download any PARs to repair, because the files are in fact complete. Now, I'm using MultiPAR. Should I go back to QuickPAR?

I don't use either one. I let Newsbin do the repair.

If you have autopar turned off. Newsbin won't do anything with the files except download them.

Sorry, Quade, brain fart. Of course autopar is turned on, I don't know why I wrote that. MultiPAR has been my workaround, that's all.

I installed the latest Beta. The problem is not solved by it. Unrar still fails cause of "wrong" password. It worked with some files, but with others it fails.

All I need is the subject and the password and I can work on it.

Just PM them to me. Now's the time, while 6.51 is in beta. I want to finish it and get it out the door.

Master, I tested both sets and they both worked for me.

1 - I added the two passwords to the rar password list.

2 - I added the downloads to the download list.

3 - I looked in the logging tab and saw:

[21:54:02] DEBUG Encrypted RAR: Password Found E55E2E3D8C29D1CCD2732E52999D1F89 bla bla.part01.rar

For both sets. Then I let them download and unrar. One file set repaired itself, one set was perfect. They both unrared.

I'd try a couple more and try looking for these log messages. I'm going to try some more experiments.

I had Dex give these two a try too and they worked for him as well. Trying to figure out why you had problems...

You're cutting and pasting the passwords into place? They seem prone to typing errors.

Yes, copy and paste. The same clipboard entry unrars without problems in Winrar.

I just tried one of the bad files again. It still fails. But if I rightklick-->Autopar-->Unrar, it works.
It unrars in the download folder, not in the normal unrar folder. But thats better, than to unrar manually.

I'm going to add a cache for the passwords. It's acting like on your machine it can't always read the password file. The cache will keep a copy of the passwords in memory so, if there's a problem reading the passwords from disk, it'll still have most of the passwords.

You do have to put the password list under Options->Rar Passwords...
If the password is present there, the files unrar without problem.
