Is this something to do with NB or Giganews ?

Newsbin is reporting a giganews problem. If it doesn't clear up, you can set a short "Download Age" then right click the group and "Post Storage/Use Download Age". To reset the group to use the download age next time you update the group.

Then you're all set.

You know the download age only applies the first time you visit a group right? When you tell Newsbin to "use download age" it just resets the group tracking so, it treats the group like it's New.

Download age has nothing to do with how much Newsbin stores. It does one thing and one thing only. Determines how many headers Newsbin will retrieve the first time you visit a group. Every subsequent visit, it's ignored.

1) Verify you have a short Download Age under Options/Setup
2) Right-click the group and select "Post Storage/Use Download Age"
3) Right-click the group again and select "Download Latest"

I did step #1
then selected all groups and picked "Post Storage/Use Download Age"
then a couple of minutes later automatic update came along.

If automatic update kicks in after you told it to "use download age" then yes, it'll use the download age for all those groups you selected. Automatic Update just does a Download Latest on all subscribed groups.

This just continues on and on for different groups.

It's one of two things.

1 - You're not following the procedure properly. Reading this topic, it does suggest that you're kind of hazy on the process.

2 - The groups keep changing (which I doubt)

How about trying this?

1 - Exit Newsbin.

2 - In the data folder, in the "spool_v6" folder search for and delete all "Range.db3" files.

This will reset all the groups.

I did this yesterday and this morning I come to find that it's happening still.

I suppose it IS possible that Giganews is Fing up. How about PMing me the name of a couple groups you're having problems with then I'll try downloading headers from Giga. I use Astra for headers because they download so much faster than Giga. I could turn giga back on and see what happens.

Everytime NB automatically downloads the latest headers i get log entries.

Is my NB corrupted ? or GN messed up ?

I am having the same problem running version 6.42. This just started this week. The groups jump around. I done the following to fix it without any success.
Deleted stored posts to download age
Deleted all stored posts
deleted group

the above lists includes multiple combinations of the above plus closes and started the application after every change.

Basically Giga returns the wrong end range from time to time. Below the last end range I downloaded.

It's looking like you can just ignore the problem. That it eventually solves itself. It's clearly a Giga problem though.

You could show them this. Tell them that occasionally the server returns a lower max record than it had returned before and then it magically returns a correct larger record number.

You can see here, it went up 3600 posts in the span of 1 second.
