RARs with passwords

Postby LawnMower2 » Thu Sep 26, 2013 11:59 am

There seems to be an epidemic of password-ed RAR posts. And all too often, there's no clue about that until it's too late when Newsbin discovers that they can't be un-RARed. So is there any way to either 1) indicate with a really obvious flag (like turning the whole subject line red or something) that the file is passworded, or 2) maybe testing the first RAR segment immediately when it's downloaded to see if it has a password, and if so, halting the download process or skipping to the next in the list. I guess implementing #2 would also mean that there would have to be a new option to say "Okay to download passworded RARs" or "Skip password detection" or something.

Interestingly, Binsearch detects passwords sometimes and flags those posts with a red warning. Of course, I don't know how they go about that, but it's certainly useful. Unfortunately, they miss some too, as I learned the hard way on more than one occasion. That's why testing the first downloaded RAR segment seems like it ought to be bulletproof.

What version are you using? Modern versions of Newsbin, 6.42 or newer, will automatically fail a passworded download unless you provide a password or force the download with "Bypass Filters".

Some clever spammers have found work arounds but, normally these work arounds are pretty visible. Like if the entire first rar is missing.

6.42 build 2146. Huh. That's weird then because I've been bitten a number of times on some pretty big (blu-ray sized) posts. What might I be doing wrong? I never use "bypass filters" unless it's for a specific reason like I accidentally deleted part of a post or something in particular that I need to re-download. I'm ~100% certain that I didn't Bypass Filters on any of the PWed posts I retrieved. I just downloaded a 26GB post this morning that failed to unRAR with the message that it was password protected. But that didn't happen until the whole blasted thing had been retrieved.

Far as I know, all Newsbin settings are defaults except for things that had to be set for it to function, like server and download folder.

I'd be most appreciative if you could give me a hint on what could be set wrong. And assuming that the PW detection is working, does it also work on files queued-up from a nzb as well as Newsbin search?

PM me an example. I'll check it out. It should download the first chunk, then send the file to the failed list.

Don't post it here.
