Obtuse "Current Progress"

The "Current Progress" is set to default. When downloading a movie I get maybe 20-120 separate lines, each a RAR file of typ. 5-250 mb each. The "Current Progress" is usually broken up into 20-100 messages each carrying part of that RAR or PAR2 file.
I like to watch the little segments filling in yellow with a green dab at the top "downloading", and seeing Newsbin try and try until the file colors in yellow and says "downloaded". Sometimes a file will just not be there, so the PAR2 files and the automatic un-RAR fix the missing ones and BANG, there's my movie.

Sometimes all the segments of a file color in as yellow with green tops, then BANG the file turns red (download failure) and a repeat try doesn't help. Well, all the segments can't fill in yellow and then BANG not be there. This is some kind of i-phony-child trick. What's going on??

I do not see why!

Each item with a green 'top' indicates that a connection is actively trying to download that chunk and the 'yellow' indicates the server being tried. It is quite possible for lots of them to start in parallel (up to the limit of the number of connections allowed). If they all start at approximately the same time then you would also expect them all to fail at about the same time. There should be entries in the Logging tab telling you why they failed.

I understand now, thanks. I'm running 50 connections so it makes sense. Still disappointing to see an entire 90-day-old DVD go 100% belly up. Either the poster is a doofus or some server weasel gnawed on it.

It could also be the result of a DCMA takedown (quite likely if still within server retention period). Copyright owners are much more aggressive than they used to be in getting items removed from the binary newsgroups.

You also might want to dial down the number of connections. For the minority living in an ISP-poor region, it might be useful, but much past 10 or so typically means your thrashing at your connection and actually slightly decreasing your overall speed. You want to run as few as possible while still maxing your speed.

Many usenet servers try to make themselves look more attractive by offering lots of connections, but that's a sales line.

Yeah, running at max induces problems. 10's what I run here and I get full speed.
