Speed Limiter fails to have any effect

Postby steigejh » Wed Jun 19, 2013 4:52 pm

For many years I've used NBPro and often made use of the speed limiter. Starting approximately with version 6, the limiter no longer works on my current system. No matter what I do to the settings, I get max bandwidth of about 24.5. I just upgraded to 6.50B11 with no change. The scheduler is definitely off. I'm using Windows 7. Can anyone suggest any troubleshooting steps?

I am not quite sure what you are trying to say. You start by saying you are talking about the Speed Limiter, but then you mention max bandwidth.

Sorry I was not clear.

I have an ADSL connection that is very consistent. Normally, when downloading a large file, the download rate is shown at about 24.5 Mbps in a small field on the lower left of the screen. That is what I mean by max bandwidth.

And, up until recently, if I set the speed limiter to, say 5.0, and turned it on, the download rate would change accordingly to around 5.0Mbps.

Now, when I turn on the speed limiter, nothing happens. The download speed does not change at all. It remains right around 24.5 Mbps. Moreover, other high bandwidth applications like Netflix or MLB.com do not get enough bandwidth to operate correctly.

Previously, if I wanted to download AND watch a movie simultaneously, I'd simply turn on the speed limiter. Now this no longer works. Is this clear? Let me quickly add that, after viewing some previous messages in this forum, I checked the Speed Limiter settings and made sure that Scheduling is turned off, as Scheduling seemed to affect the speed limiter according to previous posts.

Re: Speed limiter Not working in 6.42
"I figured out my own problem by pure luck .. turns out somehow the "scheduler " feature was enabled and i never use it .

It was overriding the limit speed option."

I have NEVER used the scheduler, but sure enough it was enabled and it does override the speed limiter setting. Disable scheduling and all is right with the world. Downloads will again slow down when requested!!!!

Thanks docsis3!

The scheduler can be enabled by clicking one of the boxes on the status bar. Seems like people click is by accident.

Thanks Quade. I'm sure that's what happened as I never set it from the menu. Since they seem to be mutually exclusive options, would it make sense to grey out the speed limiter button?

Hi Guys,

Actualy I use the speed limiting function all the time, but it has been useless lately. I have a 30Mbps conection and I usually set the limiter to 25 Mbps in order to be able to so other stuff while I download. Lately when I activate it, even though my speed is set to 25Mbps in the limiter, the speed drops to around 10Mbps and it varies from 6to 13Mbps aproximately. This has been hapening for a while now.

Any fixes or this I should look for. scheduler is completely off.

Thanks !!!

Not sure why speed doesn't match the setting.
But since it doesn't, if the setting you're using is giving you a speed that's too slow, what happens if you increase the limiter setting to something higher? Can you then get the download speed you want?

One other thing I've noticed is the post age affects my download speeds. Recent posts download at full speed or speed limiter setting, but older posts do not (perhaps over 6 months old...though there's not an exact cutoff, it's just a general pattern I've noticed). So if you were downloading older posts, try it with more recent posts in the last week or two, and see if it works any better with those.
