Version 6.50 Beta 13 Available...

Postby dexter » Fri Jul 12, 2013 5:29 pm

This one has a ton of bug fixes, best to check the release notes for details. Among cosmetic changes, the information in the Servers and Connections tabs have been combined into one tab called "Servers". Enable it under the View menu.

The details and the download link for Beta 13 is on the Newsbin Beta Page.

A small bug I've noticed in the last few betas - I have my display age set to one day and when you highlight posts and press delete to mark them old they continue to appear whenever I open the group/gog until they are 24 hours old when they disappear.

The session odometer (number to the right of the download speed) is showing the same number as the lifetime odometer (number to the left of the download speed). I really really preferred the session odometer the way it was, the amount DL'd since starting NB.

So, how do we get rid of the old "Connections" tab without doing a full GUI reset?
Now I have a Connections tab in the list which I can't get rid of without redoing all GUI customization and which is always empty... Perhaps it should just drop it automatically.

Also, on the new Servers tab, if you are going to split it sideways into two sections, it would be nice if it was possible to move the divider, Connections has a lot more info than Servers.

Unlock the lock (toolbar) and you should be able to close it with the X on the tab.

I'm thinking about the divider.

I'm in the midst of performing my weekly backup of my Newsbin Data folder and have noticed two anomalies. The existence of files titled "DonloadMarker.db3" and "DownloaderMarker.db3, in addition to the usual file titled "DownloadMarker.db3". The first two named files did not exist at the time of my last weekly backup which was performed before the update of Newsbin Pro from Version 6.50 Beta 12 to Version 6.50 Beta 13, which was subsequently performed during the morning of July 13th.

Are all three files valid files used by Newsbin Pro Version 6.50 Beta 13?

The upgrade from Beta 12 to Beta 13 was performed after the usual deletion of the then existing "AutoPAR2.DB3", Downloaded.db3, and DownloadMarker.db3 files as I always do before updating my installation of Newsbin Pro with a new version.

DownloadMarker is the only valid one. I looked through the code an none of the extra files are mentioned which suggests some sort of internal corruption.

Thanks for the report. I'll have to think about what might be getting corrupted.

Bug in 6.50B13-2883 - In a large GOG with all posts loaded ("Show All Files") sorting on "Status" never completes; left it running over night, about 14 hours, but still the window is empty:

Sorting by date completes in about 5 seconds...
Sorting by subject completes in about 14 seconds...
Sorting by size completes in about 8 seconds...
Sorting by group completes in about 18 seconds...
Sorting by poster ("From") completes in about 12 seconds...
Sorting by "Status" never completes (and I have to close the GOG's tab to break out of it.)

You just have to wait. Since status is generated dynamically. Newsbin has to do a bunch of processing per record. The more records, the more processing.

So, what should I do? Prevent a status sort if the number of records exceeds some threshold? I really don't know. If it crashed then it would surely be a bug but, it sounds more like it's just busy.

I'm not trying to say it's a great situation but, I know it was possible when I fixed the sorting. At one point the sorting was just numbers but, it didn't always sort every status properly 100% of the time. So, it's as close to 100% perfect now as I can make it but, it's slow.

Any way to tell? (I'm not seeing a lot of disk access during these "hung" sorts... FWIW, I have 8GB of ram.)

Quade wrote:...it's as close to 100% perfect now as I can make it but, it's slow.

Well, rather than sorting on status then, what I'm mostly trying to accomplish is deleting (permanently) all posts from locked-out posters.

UPDATE: Tried a couple of things...
Loaded 30 days of posts (35,837) and first sorted by other columns, then sorted by status: Took about 40 seconds to complete.
Loaded 60 days of posts (75,930) and first sorted by other columns, then sorted by status: Took about 235 seconds to complete.
Loaded 90 days of posts (115,114) and first sorted by other columns, then sorted by status: Took about 910 seconds to complete.

If you right click on the deleted posters, then select "Delete all Posts from Poster". It'll delete them all without having to load up the entire group. So, you don't actually need to load them for all time. One post you "delete all" from today will delete from all the existing spools in the currently loaded groups.

It is pretty slow. It actually has to hit a database file on disk to check against "downloaded" state. I'll look to see if there's anything obviously wrong.

Not really a bug i guess. Que'd up 2 files from internet search 1 small nfo and 1 other. The nfo search result was added and downloaded before the other file had even added to the download list. At this point NB started to shutdown. I hit cancel and NB added the other file and carried on as normal.

Still having an issue I mentioned many betas ago. I have a low volume GoG, and there are entries I cannot delete. They appear to delete, but on the next header update they show again.

What can I do? Any suggestions? I have deleted everything except the .NBI file and re-downloaded headers and still see the same issue.

Set the overlap for the server to 1. It's not that you can't delete them but, that they're being re-downloaded.

The counter "Data Downloaded this session" doesn't work. It is the same value as "Count of all data downloaded".

If I use the built in search and then try to download one of search results newsbin sometimes does not add it to the the download list. The little counter in the bottom left that shows the download speed goes up for some seconds, then goes to 0 and nothing more happens. If I exit newsbin the process is still running in the taskmanager and I have to end it there. I never waited for a longer time so I can't say if it would do something after some minutes.

The last time before trying to add a search result to the download list I checked the properties of it and newsbin told me that there were missing parts, as if some of the files were still uploading (the files are very new, under 24 hours old). When trying to download newsbin showed the behavior above. I then tried to add the same files via an nzb file from another source and now it's downloading just fine.

How long did you wait after trying to download from Search for the items to be added to the Download list? The way that downloading from a search works is that only when you ask for them to be downloaded does Newsbin starting asking for the details required for the download from the search server. This can take some time. In my experience this is typically several seconds per line added to the Download list.

I waited longer now and after about 1.5 to 2 minutes it started to download, but only added about half of the files. According to the properties there would be much less "missing". Also when it's working I have to wait around 5 to 10 seconds.

The log says: [11:44:23] ERROR CWebClient::Body - Read Failed

I also tried some older stuff and once it worked correctly and another time not (the exact same search). So maybe this is something on the search-server side.

What kind of internet access are you using? Are you downloading files at the same time? As an experiment, I might pause before I added files to the download list and see if it works better. File downloading and getting the search data have to fight for the internet connection of they're both hitting the internet at the same time. It suggests I might have to make the read timeout longer though too.

Sylvain, I'm going to look into it.

I tested one of the 2 and had no problems.

The log says: [11:44:23] ERROR CWebClient::Body - Read Failed

This is the key. The connection is failing between you and the search server. Might want to tell you firewall/security software to both ignore Newsbin and ignore HTTPS connections. Something is causing the connection to drop out.

Re: Version 6.50 Beta 13 Available...

Postby Kent_Diego » Tue Jul 30, 2013 12:35 am

I am having a problem with the Beta 13. Incomplete posts are never marked as read for a few news groups. These old incomplete posts keep showing up as new every day. I tried marking as read and deleting but the next day they re-appear.

Another annoyance is the network error dialog box. I have some old free news servers configured and every time I start NB the network error dialog pops up. I have to click to hide but it would be nice to have option to "Disable errors from this server" option.

A third annoyance is I will download headers from a bunch of news groups. The window of posts will show the "sort by" arrow at top of heading but the posts will not actually be sorted until I click the sort by arrow again. It would be awesome the post was sorted by name as remembered last preference and then actually sorted once the posts have been received.

Thanks for your hard work.

If the free servers no longer work, just delete them from the server page, or untick enabled - same result.

The free servers do work but I only get 50 MB a day. After that NB gives annoying error message requiring a click. It is just an annoyance and can be lived with but since I was listing issues it was included.

Although at 50Mb I personally wouldn't bother unless they host a specific group you cant get else where.

That is the value there. When Astraweb is missing a piece I am able to get fill from the free servers...and... it's free! (BubbaNews and TeraNews).

I hate forced click pop up warnings. I imagine the Servers tab would also show the loss of connectivity.

I'm not sure how this applies to my suggestion that you just disable the popup. In the "Confirmation Windows" options you can disable it permanently.

NB doesn't seem to join splitted files if there are no par2 files available.
sab joins them just fine.
Any way to somehow improve handling of splitted releases absent par2?
I know, it's a rare case, but still.

You mean master splitter files that end with .001, .002, etc? For now, you can join them manually by selecting them in the Files list after the download then right-click and select "Quick UnRAR(MS/RAR)".

We've discussed allowing automatic join of master splitter files, it's still on the list to consider.

I don't know if this is by design but GuiItems.db3 does not follow the DataPath setting under NewsBin.nbi. It is hardcoded to save to %LocalAppData%\Newsbin.

Without par files, there's no way to know you get a good file when you're done. I've moved the assembly of the QPMS files into the par repair part because that's how quickpar does it. The code's there to assemble non-par split files. I just don't think it's a good idea and it's rare. As Dex says you can do it manually from the right click menu.

I see an other minor bug. The download speed meter is wildly off while downloading headers. It reads around 8 times too high. I suspect this has to do with header compression.

Thanks for your hard work,

Yeah normal. It's not off at all. That's the real effective data rate when you include up to 10 times compression. I see speeds up to 500-600 Mbps sometimes from AW. That's the real speed the headers are hitting the disk.
