Version 6.50 Beta 10 Available...

Postby dexter » Thu Jun 06, 2013 10:48 am

We've gone back and forth over this and have decided to change the meaning of the server priority numbers. Priority 1 is the first priority (or highest priority) and all servers set as priority 1 will be used first. Priority 10 is now the last (lowest) priority. The Fill Server option has been removed since the lower priority servers will only get used if all higher priority servers fail. Also the failure is on a per chunk (article) basis so if all higher priority servers are missing one chunk, the lower priority server will be tried just for that missing chunk.

  • Swapped priority number meanings. Priority 1 is now the highest priority.
  • Fixed issue with passwords not working for password protected rar sets
  • Fixed issue unraring rar sets that have no par2 files.
  • Fixed issue with inaccurate icons showing up in the download list.
  • Fixed issue where header downloads for low priority servers were not being performed.
  • Changed how column sorting on group name works so it is more accurate.

You can download Beta 10 from the Newsbin Beta Page.

Just to clarify. If you've already set priorities, you're going to have to reset them.

With 6.60 Beta 10, while downloading posts consisting of multipart .Rar and .Par files to an existing folder, H:\Videos-Television\Showname-Season #, the download path is displayed in the Downloading Files and Files List Tabs/Windows as H:\VIDEOS~1\TH467A~1\78302~1.RAR. I've just learned (making a long story short) that makes it difficult to physically locate files with which Newsbin is experiencing technical difficulties.

If the display of such 8.3 folder and file names is going to be the norm (And I really hope it isn't), would you please consider providing an "Open Folder" shortcut in the Downloading Files Tab/Window menu for the individual posts displayed in that Tab/Window so that files with which Newsbin is experiencing technical difficulties can be more easily located and examined?

Thank you.

I have no idea how or why that's happening to you.

There's no code in Newsbin that does 8.3 filenames. It's all unicode, all the time.

I added a dash to one of my download paths and it's showing a dash in the download list and a dash in the files list.

Unfortunately for me, nor do I. Oh well. I've uninstalled B10 and returned to the use of B8 while I contemplate the situation, and wait for the next beta release.

Does my request warrant your consideration?

And thank you for responding.

NB still showing fill server options and column.

still seeing incorrect icons in download list

NB seams to be paying little attention to dl list order, it'll start a bunch of files off, download first chunk then move back to 1st(BTW all these 1st chunk downloaded files are the ones still showing download icon, maybe show partial download icon?) Ive currently 3 single part files all downloading at same time.

thx for setting priority to 1 as highest. imo makes more sense :)

It is normal for Newsbin to not starting 2nd and subsequent parts until the first has been successfully downloaded. Depending on how connections become free this can result on the first parts of a number of files getting downloaded in parallel, and then Newsbin going back to complete multi-part files.

If you have 40 connections and say 100 single or mixed single and double part files. The first 40 chunks will start processing (the first of the first 40 files). The second chunk doesn't start to process till the first one is finished so, there are a minimum of 40 chunks of download happening before the second chunk of any of the files downloads.

This isn't really that different. What is different is that there is come look-ahead built in, to queue up chunks for download when the workers get finished. These 20 will probably be the first chunks of the next 20 files. So, I'd say the only difference is with a bunch of connections it might be a bit before the second chunk downloads. With multiparts, this should be less of an issue because the multi-parters consume 20-200 chunks per file.

You can set the server priority by manually entering numbers, but it does not seem to save it. Choosing the numbers from the dropdown menu saves them.

One thing I have just found, clicking on the set colour for the server does nothing.
Only checked it since I was changing the prioritys back.

If I activate "Pause PARSs and only download the ones needed for Repair." in the AutoPAR Options, NewsBin does only download the main Par-File, but no additional Par-Files, if the download has files that would need repair. So I end up with whatever NewsBin can download of the main download and the main Par-File in the Temp-Directory. If I manually download some of the additional Par-Files I can repair with Quickpar.
I tried to deactivate "Pause PARSs and only download the ones needed for Repair." and then it repaired and unrared.
Aggressive Mode is enabled, if that makes any difference.

"Pause Pars" is all I use so, I'm unclear what you're seeing. There's a 90% threshold. Newsbin won't do anything until at least 90% of the file set has downloaded.

Might want to disable "Aggressive" mode and see if it makes any difference.

Are the par block counts showing at least 90% of the par blocks downloaded?

So you can download, autorepair and unrar something that has some missing chunks? Maybe something old? I had a download not autorepair and unrar because according to Quickpar only one block was missing.

Yeah works great. I have some NZB's I created to specifically test this.

How many retries do you have set?

With "Agressive" mode off it worked.
Retries are set to 2.
So it's only not working when "Agressive mode" and "Pause Pars" are both on.
NewsBin seems to think some whole files are missing, even though it's only some chunks (but maybe I am misinterpreting the Properties window).

Whole files are missing till the files are assembled from chunks. What probably isn't happening is the automatics assembly of incomplete files when aggressive mode is enabled.

Just thought that I would point out after reading this quote, since priorities have now been reversed. Now, I just use one server, and thought I would change the 10 to a 1 for server priority. With Newsbin set like this, I could dl headers, but that was all. Even tried reading a nfo file, and absolutely nothing.

As soon as I changed priorities back to the 10, my nfo file that I was trying to read popped up and dl would resume. Not sure if this is intentional, but thought I better let you guys know.

I can't reproduce it. I disabled all servers but 1, then set the priority to 1 on the remaining servers and it downloaded. I'll have to jerk with it some more.

I also have the same problem with using only one server, If I set it to 1, nothing will start downloading , and eventually will get an error msg "ran out of retries"

If I put it back to 10 , everything seems to work as normal.

How about adding a copy of that server in the servers tab, disable the copy and try again?

You can't type in the priority, make sure you use the mouse to select it. Bug in B10.

Did what you suggested and now I can set the enabled server to priority 1 and it works.

If I delete the disabled copy of the server and restart the program , it goes back to not working with just one server at priority 1.

Glad I stumbled on to your post; no downloads since b10 installed and couldn't find b09 to redownload; (i stupidly deleted all of the betas after dling b10 thinking I didn't need them (doh))

As you found, resetting Priority to 10 made downloads work, 3days of trying to find a fix (LOL)

I wonder why when only one server in settings and Priority "auto" reset to 1, why do files not download; note: headers download just fine.

B10 seems to have a problem.

I'm using the automatic download feature, it reads a group list and starts downloading. Some files are partial downloaded (that is all by design i think) but when i check the file at for example nzbindex i can see its complete. Downloading the nzb from nzbindex in B10 and the partly downloaded files complete without a problem.

This occurs not once but about 5 to 10% of the multipart files are not downloaded correctly.

Tested whit B5 and the problem is not there.

I'll think gkar mentioned the same problem about B9

What server are you using? It sounds like you're not getting all the headers between download runs.

In the server options, you might set the "overlap" to 1000 or more. The only downside of "overlap" is that it can set old posts new again when browsing the headers. I'd start with 1000. It depends on the server.

I'm using xsnews but in B5 its working alright looks like its introduced with b10 also saw a simular report in beta suppurt b9.

I will try with the suggested overlap

Tested with "overlap 3000" doesn't do anything the problem still exists. As mentioned before downloading the matching nzb does download the files also using the chunks so we are talking about the same files.

So even with the overlap the same files are bad downloads, remove the group from the spool directory and reread the same group results in the same files will not download completely

This results also in a very large chunks directory.

What's a bad download exactly?
- Files remaining in the download list
- Files that end up in the failed list
- Files that complete download but, are unrepairable.

The answer depends on how how it's failing.

A large chunks folder suggests you have a bunch of files that aren't assembling.

Thanks, are there any download mirrors? I have no newsbin installed, and am a little stuck finding a way to get the file securely :)

What's a bad download exactly?
- Files remaining in the download list
- Files that end up in the failed list
- Files that complete download but, are unrepairable.

The answer depends on how how it's failing.

A large chunks folder suggests you have a bunch of files that aren't assembling.

Oke did some testing ill try to describe them:

1. Reinstalled B5 deleted SIGNATURE.db3, spool and chunk dir. Download a group with a good result perfect assembled files and a almost empty chunk folder
2. installed B10 deleted SIGNATURE.db3, spool and chunk dir. Download the same group as in 1. bad result. Lots of failed files "ran out of retry's and a lot of files in the chunk dir. downloaded the according nzb and the missing part were downloading
3. Reinstalled B5 deleted SIGNATURE.db3, spool and chunk dir. Download/read same group as in 1. 2 . closed NB installed B10 all the files downloaded correctly

So it looks like there is something wrong with B10 reading from the news server reading nzb's is working correctly

Is pretty much normal. It happens when retries expire and you don't have any PAR files. Just for a test, how about setting the retries to 30 and see what happens? Newsbin isn't saying the files you're downloading are bad. It's saying that it couldn't finish the files before the retries were used up AND there were no PAR files so, it moved them to the failed list. You could move them back into the download list and they'd probably continue downloading too.

Normally when files are posted, the small PAR comes first and then the files and then the rest of the PAR files. If that's the way a file is posted, Newsbin will just keep retrying forever.

On the other hand, many of these new obscure posting formats don't post the PAR files till after the files are posted so, the retry logic is failing the partial downloads.

Increasing the number of retries will make it try alot longer. The downside is that Newsbin uses retries to control when to assemble partial files and repair.

I was just experimenting with this kind of download. I noticed the same thing with files that are posted with delayed PAR files. I might need to give you an option to never remove files from the download list even if the retries expire.

Oke will set retry's to 30 but please explane to me why B5 is working correct and b10 not both downloading the same files

It's pretty simply, B5 didn't move files to the failed list. B10 does. People didn't want Newsbin assembling partial files that didn't have PAR files. A partial file with no par files is just junk.

So, files that aren't complete, that don't have PAR files get moved to the failed list when the retries expire.

Unfortunately it does that even if AutoPAR is disabled which is just wrong (or at least B9 did), because it means it's very hard to manually do the PAR2 repair. Another thing it makes much harder is to "complement" the PAR2 files with additional ones downloaded via other means such as Web interfaces.

So consider this a bug report, it makes non-AutoPAR mode a lot less useful.

And some people do want a bit of control over their download, and at least earlier on AutoPAR tended to repair every single set because either the SFV or NFO file was missing (aka intentionally not downloaded!). If that's been worked around somehow I'd be willing to give AutoPAR (but not AutoUnRAR) another chance, but it's still not good behavior.
