Server options ?

Postby Jim660 » Thu Apr 25, 2013 10:59 am

Recently I asked if servers could be listed in number of which to use in order.

Newsbinpro doesn't seem to be working properly with multiple servers.

I have,
SSL-News and Xennews as Master servers.

Nextgennews
Tweaknews
Astra
These are set as Slave Server - Fill Server.

Blocknews
Usenet-news as Disabled Slave Server - Fill Server

Downloading <some shit> today, SSL didn't have anything, downloading came from Xennews, but also files were being downloaded from the fill servers.
Xennews DID HAVE all of the files as I did a double download check with ONLY Xennews connected and all files downloaded quickly and correctly.

I also downloaded from newsleecher with servers set in order of preference, from SSL and Xennews down through the block accounts, 1 to 7 and ONLY Xennews was used as SSL didn't have the files. The block servers set at 3 to 7 were not used.

If you could get this to work it would be really useful.
Thanks,
Jim.

It's on my plate for the final version of 6.50. It's not in there yet.

Basically any errors kick in fill mode currently. You first server was erroring and that activated fill mode.

I agree, only a server priority will solve this.

Thanks Quade for the explanation, I'll look forward to that option added.
I use Newsbin for everything now, but keep nl for backup !!

Another server question.

What is the correct way of setting up server options ?
I have an unlimited account with SSL-News and Xennews and block fill in account with 5 others.

If I set SSL and Xen to Master server, Normal server and the others as Slave server Fill server.
Download starts then stops and hangs. Is it setting 2 Master servers not correct ?

Your settingsd sound as if they should work. There is no reason why you should not have two master servers although it may be unnecessary.

The Master/Slave settings control whether headers are retrieved from that server so you could end up getting headers from both master servers for the same post. However it will not do any damage other than use up bandwidth, and if one server is missing some headers the other might fill in the gaps.

It might be worth checking the connection status and the Logging tab to see if you are getting any errors indicated.

noob question

do you get any added performance/speed out of running both servers as a master? Im going to run tests, but thought I would also ask the experts

Naw, master only affects headers. It's most efficient to only use one header server as long as it's good and has good completion.

Running two servers in parallel, having them at the same priority though might give you faster downloads.

This is really a trivial request, but,

I've got 6 servers, 2 are Master for unlimited accounts and 4 are block accounts.
I've set them in priority of 1 to 6, but would like to be able to position them in order of priority numerically, NOT A to Z.
NL you can just drag and drop them around.

My servers are
Astra 3
Blocknews 5
Nextgennews 4
SSL-News 1
Tweaknews 2
Usenet-news 6
Xennews 1

Also if priority was numerical in the Servers tab, the downloading info would be at the top, now Astra is at the top and Xennews my main server has to be scrolled down to see.

Why not just prepend the server name with the order you want (e.g. 3-Astra) as then the alpha sort will work fine

Hopefully this is a good place to post this. Just wondering if you've ever considered adding the ability to enable/disable a server based on the time of day? I have a second EU server that I have time restricted access to so the option would be nice.
