Version 6.50 Beta 4 Available...

Postby dexter » Mon Apr 15, 2013 11:08 pm

More bug fixes with Beta 4:

  • The option to toggle use of the Recycle Bin was hidden on the AutoPAR settings screen, it's now visible.
  • Addresses issue loading all posts into a post list introduced in Beta 3.
  • When an unrar fails, AutoPAR now sends the set to repair no matter what the current block counts say
  • Fixed issue where retries were being capped at one. Caused pre-mature feeding of files to the failed list.
  • Fixed issue where setting changes for Growl notifications were not getting saved.
The download link and more details about this release are available on the Newsbin Beta Page.

Newsbin doesn't have permissions to interfere with other apps, it might trigger a problem, but the problem is on a lower level than newsbin could possibly get at. Win 4 - you mean 8?

Remove variables to track down the problem - I would first try downloading to the c: drive and see if that goes away. It's unlikely but it's fast to check out. Then I would try completely disabling any security or antivirus programs. The fact that one version gives a problem but the other doesn't usually suggests antivirus. It's harder to get AV programs to behave than it should be.

Hmm, changing the download drive might be a problem I just realised since this happens on startup. :-) Try the AV.

I think he means Windows 7. Win 8 doesn't come in an Ultimate flavor & if you'll notice, 7 is right above 4 on the numeric keyboard. :)

I wonder if the problem is that German localisations are installed? For beta releases one needs to revert to English as the localisation process is normally only carried out as the beta process moves into Release Candidate state.

Win 4 = Win95 doesn't it, that was next after Win 3 :)

Thanks for fixing the 'retries' problem, wondered why shedloads of files were failing with retry errors!!

hmmm ... strange - I had to uninstall completely - then reinstall B4 and now it seems to work - I will report back if anything strange happens again
I think some of the DB files were corrupt since NB froze completely on startup

thanks guys for your help ;-)

Won't start up for me either. Was using B2 just fine, upgraded to B4. Now the UI comes up but as soon as I try
and do anything the title bar just shows (Not Responding).

Not even any entries in the logging window so its just hung somewhere.

No issues loading for me after upgrading sequentially from B1, B2, B3 to B4. This is on a 2.4GHz i7 + 12GB RAM + 256GB SSD.

Had the same probelem on not responding. I had come from the 6.42RC3

Tried starting several times and re-installing, no difference, was still not responding after >5 minutes.
A look at Task manager showed about 33M of memory in use each time. In normal operation i am currently using 400M if that is any clue

It didn't seem to get to/complete the shading of the grid background, though group names were there.

I also tried starting from an NZB file, but there was no indication of the NZB being loaded, and there was no evidence on reversion to my previous version, so it looks like it had not got that far.

Reverting to 6.42RC3 and started immediately

I am having same issues with b4, lots of hangs, unresponsive etc. Have to force quit to exit it. Thought it might have been wine but seeing the win responces its not. Back to b3 now.

Wonder if you should just leave it running? It does a conversion of the signature.db3 to a more efficient format. Wonder if that's causing the stall?

same here. 6.5b4 Frozen on start (updated from 6.5b2).

rebooted box and hoping it will help.

Looks like I might go back to 6.5b2.

Will try and wait longer. If it's doing a conversion, there should be some type of UI (or CPU activity in the task manager)...

6MB file (after the conversion).

Took quite a while, but all's well. Looks like patience is the key here.

Kenr, being a Linux dude, oddball behavior is sort of your lot in life. 7.5 megs should convert in a blip though. Easy way to tell would be to rename the file and see if it starts.

Gkar, The hash for the "already downloaded" files got change and has now reverted to the original. Meaning that files downloaded with B3 probably aren't showing "Downloaded" state any more.

Thx for the info re Downloaded Status

have 2 downloads A(has no pars with upload) and B

Download A completes but appears in Failed list as follows:- Description "Download A" - Status "Par Process Ran out of retries Download B" - note download B showing here is not a typo

Download B hasnt finished downloading yet. Have seen this a few times in last betas, but this is first time since B4.

btw Download A wont unpack due to a crc error even after redownloading the failed part(which shows no errors in NB)

No errors in Newsbin doesn't mean it's good. It could have been posted with bad CRC's. I've seen that numerous times. That's why I always think twice about downloading something that doesn't have PAR files. I have to assume it won't always work. Some people have been posting "rev" files with their pars lately. These can be used by WinRAR to fix them too.

If you dig around, I wonder if you can find the par files? Sometimes you have to relax the size filters and sort on subject to find them.

Whenever I get this I use winrar to unpack them - when the winrar popup window appears make sure that ''keep broken files'' is checked in the miscellaneous section and the file unpacks even though you get an error message about the crc. 99.9% of the time the file is good.

Well, that error is telling you not all of the file would download and Newsbin rejected it because there were no PAR files. You said it downloaded perfectly but, the fact it went into the failed list suggests Newsbin didn't think so.

So I had the initial issue of B4 just hanging which I posted and consequently went back to B2.

Just gone back to B4 today after seeing the posts about it converting the Signature.db3 file.

Watched the resource monitor and could see reads from the Signature.db3 by newsbin and writes to it by the system.

Left it alone and after 40 minutes the activity finished and newsbin has been ok now.

If conversion can take this long then a progress bar is certainly needed I would say.

So for now so far so could with B4.

I can confirm that after leaving the update for a "long" period it completed.

However one issue that leads you to believe that it is not doing anything is that the background of the Downloading Files pane which in my case is normally alternating grey, is actually white, which is usually a sign of not responding. My normal Application Look is Office 2003 Outlook

It's one of those internet mysteries.

I mean, I don't have all the answers. I note your comments and see if something shows up when I look at the code.

- Display: Gkar reports that it's possible to see the wrong status text on a failed download.

This is my note.

Ditto on the grid and shading issue. Reverted to 6.42 as well. More theme choices would be a plus - imho.
