6.5b2 per ip connection limit

Postby oferlaor » Sun Apr 07, 2013 2:59 am

Ever since i started using 6.5b2 I'm getting errors about "passed per ip connection limit".

I believe that the issue is that the software disconnects, but somehow still leaves the connection open. At one point or another, I hit the per-ip connection limit and the software stops downloading altogether.

this is a new issue and was not there in previous versions.

Not seeing that with astra and I'm running both US and Euro servers which tends to push me over my limit if anything like this happens. I'll keep an eye peeled for this, though. My connections appear to behave as they always have. I forget, you running astra?

Yep. Astra.

I contacted them and they asked for a screenshot of the parameter settings showing number of connections.

I tried but I am unable to reach the server screen altogether with 6.5b2...

As mentioned in the other thread, using the menu Options/Server still works. At least here.

I'm not. How many connections are you using? I'd back off the connections and see what happens. Newsbin doesn't leave the connections open but, typically News servers are slow to release closed connections back to the connection pool.

I could throw a re-connect delay in there but, then it would impact the people who don't have this problem.

If you are using Astraweb and have told Newsbin it can use 20 connections, then this is not at all unusual (20 is the maximum on an Astraweb account). This is due to the fact that Newsbin can recycle a connection at its end much faster than the Astraweb end can.

You always want to have Newsbin set to less than the account type allows to allow for this fact. Try backing off in Newsbin to about 10 and see what happens. In fact you should use the minimum number of connections that can saturate your download speed for optimum behaviour.

Yeah, I'd use 10 connections. I'll bet you see minimal if any reduction in speed. 20 connections on a 20 connection limit is asking for problems unless you internet connection is pretty perfect.

1. Strange, never ever had this issue before
2. It seems like it went away. It's possible this was an ASTRA issue (I reported it to them and a day later, the issue did not appear).
3. I'm not sure if it's a bandwidth thing (probably not, I bet it's a latency issue + the types of files I get) but I do get much better download speeds with 20 connections than I do with 10. The difference can be 20-30% better. I didn't benchmark SSL, but my feeling is that this could also contribute to performance when SSL is being used.

It will come back, just so you know. No question the server end might vary a bit, as do general internet conditions, either of which will drive this, but if you run the max connections available, you'll get hit by this. You'll have to decide whether the error state ends up hitting your overall speed more than a few connections less, I guess. I would dial it back at least 3 or 4 myself, FWIW. Typically nowadays just adding more connections tend to cause more 'network thrash' as opposed to making your pipes seem thicker, but depends on your scenario of course.
