Groups won't load!

Postby Myers75 » Tue Feb 12, 2013 2:44 pm

Hi

It seems my Newsbin won't load all the groups from the server. I tried and tested the thing with other newsreaders and it loaded ok all the groups. When I download groups with Newsbin some groups are missing. I tried deleting Groups.db from Appdata folder and redownload but it's still the same thing. What could be the problem?

I am running the app in Windows7.

What server?

What groups are missing?

Are you sure you're not just filtering them out in the groups window?

Server is Newsleecher. For example alt.binaries.mpeg.videos.music. I could see it in the Newsleecher but it won't show in my Newsbin groups. Filters are off. Also couldn't fing Howard Stern on demand group.

Just for shits and grins, how about adding that group manually and see if it works? I'm wondering if their server simply doesn't return a full list. Downloading the groups list is about as simple a thing as you can do on usenet.

Maybe since it's a Newleecher server, there's some secret handshake to get the complete groups list which other clients don't send. As a test, you could try the 3 day giganews trial and download the groups list from them and compare. For all we know, Newsleecher might be downloading the groups list from their website instead of their news server.

Yep it seems you have a point here. When manually adding the group all seems ok. It downloads headers and all. Got another question. I made my Newsbin to look like version 4 but when I try to minimize it to tray the main shell minimizez but the windows stay open. What seems to be the problem?

Sounds like you've managed to detach some of the windows instead of attaching them to a border or another window. The post lists attach themselves to the search tab so, if you've somehow managed to hide the search tab, the post tabs will probably come up unanchored.

I'm not really sure why it's happening to be honest.

I still have this proble with Newsbin. I am now with Usenet provider and I update my groups and the load is not complete. Still some groups are missing. I tried with deleting groups.db but the updating still comes out incomplete. What could be the issue?

Are you sure the provider actually has the groups you are looking for? If you have updated the group list in Newsbin after setting up your provider it should have every group that the provider reports they carry.

Of course, just because they carry a group it does not mean it actually has any content. The vast majority of groups are moribund.

Hm I think they should have them. I am missing groups like alt.binaries.erotica.pornstars.90s and alt.binaries.e-books.magazines which I think are really a core groups and shouldn't be missed.

As far as I can tell, ebooks.magazine doesn't exist. ebook.magazine does. The other group is on both giga and astraweb, the 2 servers I use.

Both groups seem to be on the servers I use with content. I deleted the groups.db3 file in the newsbin data folder, re-downloaded the groups list and both groups appeared again.

Not working here. Also I am getting a lot of incomplete headers lately from with Newsbin. I think I will be migratting back to Newsleecher.

You can easily enter them by hand in both the "add groups" window and/or manually editing the configuration file. Just make sure you type in the right name.

My guess is your server simply isn't returning them in the list and that Newleecher gets their groups list off their website instead of from the server.

Don't know Quade. Something's not working right. I also get a lot of headers lately with a message "Incomplete. Missing data for download" or something like that. Newsleecher works like a charm for me and I think I'll stick with what's not broke. Thanks for the quick replies anyway.
