NBP 6.42 RC3 / Build 2143 / 'Assign a new path' crashes

Postby EviLFazZ » Wed Jan 30, 2013 1:22 am

Hey all :D

It's my first post on the lovely NewsBin forum in a long time... but sadly it's a problem post

I wasn't sure if I should bother the technical support directly on this one, as it's not a huge problem, but it's a function I use, which I can't right now due to NewsBin crashing every time I try to use 'Assign a new path...'.

When I say this, I mean... items in the 'Download files' windows/tab already are downloading correctly to my pre-defined temp folder/HDD and once completed, files are unrar'ing correctly again to the pre-defined folders. However, if select an item, right click and try to change the unrar path, as in 'Assign a new path...' NewsBin a blank selection windows pops up (allowing me to do nothing) and just freezes. I've given NewsBin a few minutes, but nothing and if I click randomly on the window, it eventually just crashes :(

I can capture a still of the fault if needed, but it's possible that this fault is already know (though I didn't see any related posted in the last month when I searched) or hopefully from what I'm blabbering on about makes enough sense

Is this an english version of Newsbin?

"Assign a new path" won't necessarily change the unrar path. It depends on what your options are set to. This is intended just to set the download path.

Thanks Quade but I think I'm confusing you/anyone else with another option :?

Posts (not in the 'Downloading files' tab), it gives you three different downloading options, but for posts that are already in the 'Downloading files' queue, it will allow you to re-assign the unRAR path, which is what is actually crashing for me and still in build 2146... and yes ... English version :D

Hopefully this image grab will help illustrate my minor problem better when 'Browse for Folder' opens  Image 2559x821 http://goo.gl/fOF48 :)

Hmm, just tried to repro that here in 2146(only had a few tweaks since your release) and it worked fine. Anything unusual about any of your drives? External, perhaps, that could conceivably be in sleep mode?

You have many net shares and/or drives that spin down? That's purely a windows window, meaning I just tell it to display and windows does everything else. I've seen some things like that when drives spin down and have to spin back up or when net shares are missing. In the Advanced options, you can try changing the folder picker it uses. Maybe that will change the results?

Thanks, but it's certainly not the drive spinning down, as it crashes the moment it opens and where it starts is from the default destination, which is being actively used. I've not ever seen this problem in the past and never with other software previously too, so why I thought I mention it

The drive (what I think) is decent is a 1Tb WD Black Server drive, strictly just for downloads for such... software

Probably irrelevant stuff: The other HDD's running off the same motherboard are 2x 3Tb WD Red (RAiD), 1x 256Gb Samsung Pro SSD, 1x 480Gb Corsair N SSD and 1x 1Tb WD Velociraptor (A/V Scratch only)... others are on separate eSATA RAiD box and NAS box, which aren't used for any of this :)

Thanks Quade, I forgot about the 'Older Folder Picker' option, which I've switched to for now and hopefully will work until it's possibly noticed by others and if not, I'll just stick to the old method.

I forgot to mention though, it doesn't always crash, just randomly after using a couple of times, which again is odd I think. It is possible that's it's something to do with Windows 8, but I must say, I've found little problems with Windows 8, except manufactures drivers support for older gear  ...Same story, different OS

Thanks Newsbin friends and I will update in a week or so, if the 'Older Folder Picker' works better for me

Not clear how crashing immediately rules out timed out OS drive requests. If newsbin asks the system for something that should just be there, and for some reason isn't, the response the OS gives back might not be handled correctly. I would try running everything off your C drive just as a test and see if you can repro. My guess is you can't, and there's something up on the OS level. Maybe it's related to all those devices hanging off the motherboard. Another diagnostic option is to disable as many drives as possible, reboot, and try again with just your OS and data drive. The tough thing about issues like this is that they tend to be tied to very specific configurations and thus are a bugger to repro.

NBP 6.42 / Build 2146 / 'Assign a new path UnRAR' crashes

Postby EviLFazZ » Tue Feb 12, 2013 9:50 pm

Thanks DThor, my OS sits on an SSD, which doesn't ever sleep (as it doesn't need too) and if the other HDD's need to be actively awake 24x7 just to bring up the 'folder selection' window from a software point, then something hasn't been done right... right? :?

In all honesty, it's not a big enough problem for me to have re-configure Newsbin to work on a single drive, though I see your highly valid point, it's just more hassle than it's worth :?

I previously (really) should have said... Newsbin is installed on 'C', the Cache/Temp/Spool/etc is on 'D', Downloads/RAR's/etc is on 'T' and finally assembled on 'X'. All are completely separate drives (not partitions) and are primary drives running via SATA6 controllers in NTFS

Again, I posted about this fault, as it didn't happen previously and though it doesn't happen always, I'm safe enough using the 'Older Folder Picker' option, because it seems like I'm the only one on this forum experiencing this minor issue. I don't ever see this issue in the great many of other applications I use on my little system, so will probably just keep to using the 'Older Folder Picker' option until it happens to someone else in Newsbin and possibly fixed... if of course, it needs fixing at all :?

It's up to you, you're spread all over multiple devices, obviously something is failing when newsbin is doing a bog-standard request for a resource from the OS. I know exactly how I'd go about troubleshooting it(*everything* local on c, verify it's non-repeatable, change one drive at a time until fail) , but you've got to measure the worth to your time.

NBP 6.42 / Build 2146 / 'Assign a new path UnRAR' crashes

Postby EviLFazZ » Wed Feb 13, 2013 12:43 pm

Thanks and "Time is Everything" DThor, so as this issue doesn't effect me hugely, especially with the alternative option, I'm KooL ...for now

I'm always take a "wait and see" approach to weirdies like this. If one persons reports it, I note it and give it some thought. If two or more people report it, I dig in. The only way Newsbin could be causing this is if I tell the windows something wrong. So, I'm not sure where to go with it.

That's all good with me, especially as there is a workaround that works perfectly fine for me, so it's all KooL for now :D

Sorry for my delayed reply... something to do with a 'whole' of week of Valentines fun
