Hardware Upgrade pending - what's best for SW

Postby wmoritz » Sun Dec 30, 2012 9:37 am

I have a failing CPU fan so it’s time for an upgrade, existing is:

Asus M2N-SLI motherboard with AM2 socket
Processor AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 5800+ 3.00 Ghz
4.00 GB memory
64-Bit Windows 7

I wish to change the CPU and memory while I have the case open to enhance your software operation since it waits too long while sorting headers.

How much are you planning on spending? That's the key question. I think a multi-core i3/i5 intel would be the best way to go but, it depends on your budget.

If the issue is primarily time to insert headers, it's the drive you want to replace - an SSD or hybrid. I'm unsure sticking with the same hardware except for a cpu/mem change will make all that much of a difference in apparent speed. You're sort of limited in what you can install anyway with the motherboard staying the same, I tend to pair cpu+motherboard and never switch it out.

It's mostly about IO with newsbin, certainly once you're at the level of system that you've described.

since it waits too long while sorting headers

it depends on what this means. If you're talking about loading, then a faster disk will help. If you're talking about sorting by clicking a column header, a better CPU will help.

Your current CPU is pretty anemic

I wouldn't buy an AMD anything these days. Intel totally kills them.

How about this? Another $50 for 8 gigs of RAM.
