Version 6.41 Release Candidate 1 Available...

Postby dexter » Fri Dec 14, 2012 7:19 pm

More bug fixes. We have moved into Release Candidate status. That means unless there is a critical issue found, this will become the final release. Language translations have been turned on too so 6.41 is now available in all the languages that 6.40 had.

Here is a list of changes for this version:

  • Fixed issue calculating free space on drives pointed to using UNC paths
  • Fixed issue using UNC paths for NAS drives
  • Fixed issue where the trailing slash for download paths was not getting added
  • Changed the manual "Assemble Incompletes" option to force assembly when used on individual files in an expanded set. If you do it to a full set, it will do a "Smart" assembly instead of blindly putting together whatever it can find.

The download link is on the Newsbin Beta Page.

If you find any issues, either reply to this post of contact us through the Newsbin Technical Support form.

Greetings and happy holiday wishes to all... I downloaded the new 6.41RC1 today and ever since the speed on ANY d/l starts up fine then drops thru the floor.... it is currently attempting a d/l that is running at the abysmal pace of 3.9 Kbps/<1KBps. I have tried with several different downloads and all do the same thing. Any suggestions? btw, its nothing more than small file, simple TV episodes that I like to watch 'commercial-free' lol

If this just started happening after an upgrade, most likely your firewall or Internet Security software started blocking Newsbin. The upgrade will look like a different program to your security software. Click the Logging tab and if you see a bunch of 10060 or 10061 errors, that's probably what it is.

Failed to retrieve Article from Server:My_Server ARTICLE <part ***************@******************> |430 no such article

This is the logging script that is repeated/repeating...
the file/s I am downloading are nothing but cartoons and TV series episodes in groups and by posters that I have been using for years, nothing 'untoward'. It isn't just one, but very many different posts. How do I get the other NBP back??
I have a prompter that requires my permission to allow any changes (such as installing an upgrade) and I allowed this upgrade.

The 430 error is from the news server, it has nothing to do with the version of Newsbin you are running. The copyright holders seem to be getting more aggressive about issuing DMCA takedown notices against their material.

Ok, thnx. Just seems strange that I have been downloading 50-60 year old cartoons (daffy, donald, etc) for a couple days and then as soon as I upgrade....this happens? With those same cartoons that were in my download queue. Ah well
But the 430 logging error would still not have anything to do with the drastic speed reduction, would it? ....and that IS, after all my primary concern here. I have gone thru my firewall settings and nada....

The 430 errors would definitely explain your speed reduction. Newsbin is requesting files from the server, and is being told they are not available. Only when Newsbin requests files that ARE available will your speed go back up.

Got it, thnx...I did a bit of experimenting and discovered pretty much that, after reading the post by Dexter over again, as well as yours now.
Anyhow...HAPPY HOLIDAYS & A MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ONE AND ALL!!! :D

I seem to be getting very SLOW header d/l's (300K on a 70Mb fibre connection) I have been using astra for headers for years and always got high speed from the xover option. But in the past 3 versions it has dropped.

It maybe a wine issue buy it was working fine.

System Mint 14 Mate 64bit, wine 1.5.19, no firewalls or av to worry about.

Since the demise of nzb matrix, header downloads with all the suppliers has gone through the roof. You're probably seeing that, I've noticed it too depending on time of day. It's been better recently.

If I hit the update button and update 100 groups at once to AW, with 10 connections, I get download speeds in the 300+ Mbps range (due to header compression). So, I'm not seeing a header download slowdown with either Newsbin or AW. You do have XFeatures enabled in the server options? That's the default so, it should be yes.

Yes it is unticked, as I said it has only been with previous 3 beta's previously I was getting downloads in the Mb regionm but since them it has been under 300K for updating 34 groups. I have check with alternative providers (Hitnews and usenetnews) and get the same.
Will see if I still have an older beta and will re-install it to see if the problem stays.

Sounds like a disk IO issue. Be interesting to see if the older ones do the same thing.

Re: Version 6.41RC1 Download to Folder named for Subject

Postby OMG2011 » Tue Dec 18, 2012 4:53 pm

I noticed an interesting effect in the latest version (I think I also saw it in the former beta releases):
When I use "Download to Folder named for Subject" two folders are created:

    1. "<something> - yEnc"
    2. "<something> - file_id.diz yEnc"
The first folder receives the downloads, including the "file_id.diz" file, the second folder stays empty.

RIght, today b2 same setup.
Header download peaked at 2.9Mb opposed to 300k on RC1. (all speeds measured by the network throughput applet)

So there is def. something slowing it down under wine.

I've got problems newsbin failed to detecting already downloaded files, while on 6.40 this issue doesn't exist, the same thing happened when using load nzb and checking it manually :(.

More testing shows it changes betwewen b2 & b3+. With b2 full speed but with b3+ about 10% speed.

It's changing in a major way in 6.50 too. The mechanism for header download is the same for all those version, it's possible the version of "Sqlite" changed within those versions though. That's the only thing that might impact header download speed.

I don't know if it's limited to this version or not, but a bunch of files I am getting seem to not generate a valid file. The files are split up in .001, 002, 003 etc, after it downloads the last file, no joining procedure is done, the files just get deleted.

Do they have PAR files?

That's about 90% of what I download.

They do. From what i've observed, even if the par count is good, it will still continue to download the rest of the pars before it deletes itself from the list and computer.

PM me an example. I probably downloaded a gig of this type file yesterday with no issue. Newsbin won't delete unless it thinks the file assembled/repaired properly. I wonder if the file's just not in a folder you expect it to be in.

I think the issue is specific to one poster I am downloading from. I'll try another file tonight to see if it's definitely happening but i'm pretty sure there is no output file because I can't find it in the file list nor by doing a search.

Re: Version 6.41 Release Candidate 1 Available...

Postby Alamei » Mon Jan 07, 2013 4:13 pm

After I upgraded to this version, I noticed that it is suddenly taking forever to compile the RV4 files into the DB3 when spooling new headers. It used to happen so quickly I didn't even notice it, but now it takes about 5 minutes per 100k headers. Has any code changed around the spooling process in the 6.41 betas? If not, is there any sort of Database Cleaner tool like there was for 5.x that I could try running to see if some DB3 corruption is the culprit?

EDIT: I compacted the post storage databases from within Newsbin, and that seemed to speed things back up significantly (in addition to cutting the file sizes by ~30%). Perhaps it was just coincidence that I started noticing speed issues when I upgraded.

EDIT 2: The compacting speed up was either temporary or just a placebo effect; everything is running really slow again now. Monitoring resource usage, I see that Newsbin is using 50% CPU (one full core) while spooling headers now. Is there anything that might be causing it to perform extra processing during header spooling?
