How do I read the log file without running the software (as soon as the software loads, I get a lot of items logged on)

Maybe someone else has some ideas, but that's where my head would be at if I were in your scenario. A clean OS install can make the world of difference. Sometimes software leaves an odious trail of taint that breaks things even though you've uninstalled it.
