version 6.40 takes FOREVER to load headers

Postby pjcamp » Mon Dec 10, 2012 5:33 pm

It is currently in the fifth hour of loading a set of headers that was downloaded yesterday, so there's no network traffic involved. According to process explorer, it is consuming a steady 25% of CPU time to do so and is engaged in quite a lot of disk activity during that time. I've seen references, in searching the forums, to not having "show file names" and "compact view" checked. As far as I know, I don't have those options checked since I can't find them. The only reference to them in the help wiki is in filters and I'm not using any filters. No errors are in the log. I'm kind of at a loss as to what to look at next. I tried an experiment of loading a group, closing that group and reloading. That went much faster so my guess is that it is doing some sort of one time only database cleanup, or sorting, or something. Any ideas how to tame this? Running under Windows 7 on a 2.4 Ghz quad core machine.

6.41B4 is the solution. You can blame spammers for it.

Well ok then. You wouldn't think there would be much percentage in usenet spam these days. Thanks!

Spammers are using usenet to distribute trojans to get more recruits for their botnets.

You wouldn't believe how many people have written to say "I download such and such and when I clicked on the EXE, nothing happened". Something happened alright.

My first post on here, so hello Everyone.

This was going to be my primary question also, so i will try B1 and hopefully fix it.

Also, sorta of OT but while here, since more and more people are getting SSD's it would be nice (easier) if you could expand the 'Open Data Folder' to also allow for its location on another drive as have been done with the other file/folder locations at top of that window.

Thanks.

You can move it. Details on how are in the help area of the web site. Dex is thinking about letting you pick it again from the installer. The problem is, changing the data folder without moving the data will lose you all of your headers. You're talking about moving 30+ Gigs of data too so, it won't be quick.

Yep, i followed the instructions, created the folder structure I wanted, moved the data and it worked ok. np with your method.

BUT, after updating to B4, Still sluggish header download from AstraWeb's SSL. Understandably initial Headers is alot for some of those groups, but with a 175Mbps I would hope that it would do better.

No more XOVER errors since moving to B4, was getting 150 per hour while on 6.40Final.

I regularly get 500-600 Mbps header download speeds to both AW and Giga. The problem today is the everyone and their brothers are downloading header and the servers are taking a beating. I'm skeptical that Newbin is the limiting factor here.
