help newsbin downloading all headers

Postby masimo » Wed Dec 05, 2012 3:02 pm

Yesterday I found that the pause was not working. I went to scheduler and turned it off. Pause began to work again.

Next time I checked the newsgroups there were 35k+ "new" headers in the bin. Dates went back to several hundred days. I cleaned it out and now I just checked again and there are again thousands of new headers with old dates and all the new stuff is not there.

I changed nothing except turning off scheduler and that was changed only because it was already misbehaving. It is still using the same directory and the retention settings have not changed: download age 800, display 3, storage 1000.

I am running on a windows virtual machine on a macbook pro using parallels. The only thing I recall doing differently lately is suspending windows when I rebooted the mac with newsbin still open while suspended. I usually close newsbin when I suspend but didn't this time.

Any idea of what is happening and how can I fix it other than just letting it continue to download until it his the max age again.

thanks,

Mike

It might be the server sending the wrong group range. I've seen that a bunch recently.

Probably the best way to reset it is to right click the group, select "Post Storage/Use Download Age"
Then set a 5 day download age.
Then update the group.

turned out that parallels somehow assigned the same logical disk to two different physical disks in windows. The old link went to a new disk without a newsbin download directory so it went ahead and created a new directory then did just as it should according to the setting.

rebooted parallels so it found the old original disk and everything is back to normal.

lesson: in parallels don't suspend with newsbin running. shut it down then suspend and there is no problem.
