Version 6.40 Release Candidate 2 Available...

Postby dexter » Thu Aug 30, 2012 6:20 pm

Getting closer to final release. This one has a bunch of bug fixes.

Summary:
  • Fixed issue where the duplicate detection system wasn't catching file sets without PAR files.
  • Exit prompt and auto-shutdown could collide. Made change so if auto-shutdown is enabled, it'll override the exit prompt.
  • Fixed issue where a "$" appearing at the beginning of a path was causing the path to fail to work.
  • More miscellaneous bug fixes

More details and the download link is on the Newsbin Beta Page.

Seems that RC 2 takes a little longer to start up than previous versions. I use NBP pretty basic and don't save any newsgroup posts. I get in, get my stuff via nzb's, then get out. So I don't have tons of stuff that might cause a delay in loading. Can the problem lie elsewhere if you didn't change start up behavior?

If the download list is empty, you might want to kill the downloads.db3.

How long is it taking?

Takes about 4-5 seconds. Prior releases loaded almost instantaneously. NBP is on an SSD btw. Deleting downloads.db3 had no affect on loading time.

Using NB 6.40RC2-2035... Loading multiple NZB files (via the menu) only loads the contents of the last-selected NZB file.

For example...
If I have: stuff1.nzb, stuff2.nzb, stuff3.nzb
...and select stuff1.nzb, then 2, then 3...
...only the contents of stuff3.nzb is loaded.
If I select stuff3.nzb, then 2, then 1...
...only the contents of stuff1.nzb are loaded.

:?:

(I want to load the contents of all those NZB files into one tab.)

I can't make this fail. Not with RC2. With it set to open them in multiple tabs, it opens multiple tabs. When I set it to use a single tab, it opens them both into a single tab.

Anything special about the NZB's? Like weird source locations?

Quade,

1. Any ideas on why NBP is starting up slower, or is 4-5 seconds acceptable in you opinion?

2. I thought you might like to check out the contents of Logfile.txt which is pasted below. Notice the second line in the log, the line in blue. I'm running Windows 8 Pro x64 RTM. I don't know if this line was also produced under Windows 7 as I never looked at this log before. I do know that under W8 many more programs require you to 'run as administrator' or set it in Compatibility mode for the shortcut itself. I took the latter route for NBP.

[07:15:44] HIGH - Par2Repair - Multi-core 1.3
[07:15:44] DEBUG - High Speed File Creation Mode: Disabled - "Run as Administrator" to Activate this mode
[07:15:44] HIGH - Aggressive Assembly mode: Enabled
[07:15:44] HIGH - PAR Pausing: Enabled
[07:15:44] LOW - Connection Status: SSL Connection Server: unlimited.newshosting.com Stats: DHE-RSA-AES128-SHA 128 TLSv1/SSLv3

The admin message has been there for a while in other OS releases. Basically the fast mode(where it doesn't fill with zeros first for security reasons but just makes a file) has been in newsbin for a while but then it was discovered only admin permission allows the action. It's determined virtually instantly based on the startup information, so it's unrelated to the startup issue.

I think noting the apparent startup hit is worthwhile information, probably will give something for Quade to think about, but really when you're talking such a small difference, you have to take it with a grain of salt. It's not like everything scales directly from ssd to platters - If it did you're talking about 4 times slower startup times which is certainly not anything I've noticed, and I would. If it's really bugging you, I would reinstall an older version, reboot, do a proper timing, then repeat(with a reboot!) with a new version and see if you can ever repeat the first startup time.

I occasionally get error messages (this not specific to rc2) like issues with the usenet provider. Any reason why these messages are modal instead of showing up
In a dedicated tabbed window?

Also, my nbi got cleared again. This has happened twice for
Me since moving to 6.4 betas. Never happened before that...

- For the NBI's, I suggest pulling up the backup (options menu). I'm have no issue with this but, Newsbin stores up to 10 copies of your older NBI's.

- You can turn the popup window off. It's in the confirmation windows options. You do know about the logging tab right?

NZBs were produced via BINSearch. Gonna try to send you a ZIP of some...

Tried, but PM system says "Extension not allowed"

I didn't know I could turn it off. The logging window is not great, there is no way to search it...

About the backup nbi, that's how I got things back up. I am not sure why it happened to begin with.

ALSO... The right-click-assemble-incompletes problem isn't fixed; I can send you an example NZB with an incomplete file that refuses to assemble-incompletely. (With RC2)

On an unrelated note... On the "Reload Group data" pulldown menu, can both "Show All Files" and "Show Special..." be moved up to the top, just under "Display Age" so that having to scroll down the list every time isn't necessary...? Thanks!

I figured it out.

I'd front loaded the SSL initialization and it turns out it takes about 3 seconds for SSL to initialize itself. Mainly for it to get a random number. So, I had to move this initialization into a thread and then defer some other initialization....anyway. The window comes up fast now but, it's still doing initialization in the background.

Bug Report
Since version 6.40 beta 2 when you Enable a news server, you have to close and reopen Newsbin to enable the news server.

Knew you's figure it out Quade. When will this fix make it to the next beta?

btw... Any thought on updating your Avatar to the 'new' Quade' ?

Not as far as I can tell. I enable AW Euro and 4 new connections show up in the connections tab.

How I assume you mean RC2. If you're really using B2, you need to upgrade.

Connections show up but if you try to download something it won't start.

Disable all your news servers, quit Newsbin,
start Newsbin, enable your news server and try to download something
your download won't start before you close and reopen Newsbin.

nb634 and nb640B1 are ok

nb640B2, nb640B3, nb640B4, nb640B5, nb640B6, nb640B7, nb640RC1, nb640RC2 are problematic

I'll bet if you select the files and do a "Retry Download" it'll start working. I also bet any new files you add to the download list after you enable the server will download with that server too.

I'll try your experiment when I get a chance.
