Internet search probs

Postby bonalymac » Mon Aug 20, 2012 10:52 am

If I search an internet search (I use GigaNews) for a group search for a group I've created called Audio books (the main one is a.b.mp3.audiobooks), and set a
filter as per the help file

NewsBin also allows you to apply a size filter to your searches. Set a maximum and/or a minium file size using the Max Size and Min Sizedropdown boxes and only search results referencing posts less than the maximum size and/or greater than the minium size will be displayed.

I get apparently no effect from the filters, either entering them before or after search.

For example, If I search for "Painted" with a one month time limit, and a min size of 500Mb, I get (currently) 74 results everyone of which is 372 days old, and the largest of which is 55Mb.

I know some small files are included to assist searches, but here I should be getting a "No Result" repsonse, (or at least a few small nzb's or whatever)

Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong please. I know this used to work, but I can't tell if I've changed a setting somewhere or what.

Thanks

Using 6.40B8, I can't repro your results. If I set a 1 month filter, I get no hits. If I set to 500 MB filter, I get no hits too.

Looking at the group headers, there is no match newer than 187 days and no files > 500 MB.

It suggests it's simply broken in the version you're using.

Interesting results.

Firstly thanks for the speed and the help that you guys reply with. It really is appreciated. Rarely get customer service like this elsewhere.

Anyway, before I posted the last message, I did wonder if anything was corrupted. I checked my version, and I was in B6, so I downloaded B7, did an uninstall (although I kept the registry settings). I also kept a copy of my nbi file.

So I then installed V7 (as far As I can see, B8 isn't realesed to us yet), and restored my nbi file, and the results I got were as I stated.

So I've uninstalled again, but this time deleted all data (I took screen dumps of all my settings so I could re-install identical to before). I then did a registry search and deleted all remaining refs to Newsbin (there were 22), and re-booted.

This time I re-installed and created a completely new settings nbi file from scratch. I get the same results. Still getting apparently wrong answers. If I change the filters after search, I get no change in the diaplayed results either.

I have a screen dump of my search and results if it will help.

I am not able to recreate your problem with either B6 or B7. How about sending a screenshot of your results after doing a search that fails for you? Make sure I can see everything on the filter bar in the Search tab. You can send it to ts at newsbin dot com. Please send as a straight image file, like jpg or png. Our mail server will reject .zip files since spammers like them so much.

It is based on search only showing the newest 2000 results initially. More (older) search results can be added by clicking the green + next to the magnifying glass.

You can hit the "Load Older Posts" button to get the next 2000. It's on the Search tab, dwell your cursor over the buttons to read the description, it's kindof hard to explain. I don't remember if 6.31 has it or not. You should upgrade to either 6.34 or 6.40 which is currently in Release Candidate status.

Production release is at http://www.newsbin.com/freetrial.php
6.40 is at http://www.newsbin.com/beta.php

Both are free upgrades.

What problem is that? I think the original poster just didn't know how search was supposed to work and now he does.

If you get 2000 results, you have to ask for more using the bent left arrow thingy.

I ment the Filter function (Size, Age etc..). When i search something, NB displays me 997 Results. Then, i want only see entries >1 GB so i click on Min Size and choose 1G but nothing happens. The same @ Age, Min Size, Max Size.

That's applied on your next search. AFAIK, the only 'live' element in search is the text field. You're probably thinking of spools.

I've tried that, which unfortunately did not work. I restarted NB, set the age (12 h) and size (>1G), wrote the searchterm, pressed Enter and got 2000 Files with the age of 93 Days and size between <1 KB and 25 Gigs.

What version of Newsbin are you running? There was a version a while ago where this was broken. The latest production release is 6.34 and the new version, 6.40, is close to final release.

PM me exactly what your search term is so I can try to recreate the issue. I just tried with my own terms and it worked as expected with 6.40RC2.
