Issue with downloaded files

Postby dbedgood » Sun Aug 05, 2012 9:43 am

Hi, I'm currently running 6.33 and have noticed that if I reboot my machine after I've downloaded some files i.e. 4.5GB out of 10GB, then when I log back in it starts from the beginning again. Why is this happening?

I'd upgrade and see if it still does it. The way it's supposed to work is that it re-checks the files you've already downloaded but, doesn't download them over again. It rechecks by downloading the first chunk of each file and then running it through autopar again.

The newest download from the main download page. You're running a slightly older release.

You could try the beta too. It's pretty close to release.

Just to be clear, you exit Newsbin before rebooting right? If you just shut the machine down out from under Newsbin, it can't save the partial download state.

I'm not 100% sure I do shut newsbin down first before a reboot every time so will make sure I do in future. I've also upgraded to 6.34 so if I make sure I shut newsbin down before rebooting and it still happens I'll get back in touch.

Thanks for your time.

To be clear, anything other than exiting NB before a relog, restart or shutdown is to be avoided. Is this info somewhere in the manual or forum? I have lost count the amount of times i have'nt shutdown NB before restarting etc.

Could you tell what are the mechanics for windows and apps when the O/S exits for a reboot etc.

thx for youre time:)

It's supposed to shut itself down cleanly but, if you want to be on the safe side. Close it first. It saves a number of things on exit including information about partial file downloads.

I've been having the same issue, am running version 6.34 bld 1886 on Win7 x64 machine. If I have items still downloading when I (cleanly) exit, they will start over again when I start Newsbin back up. The program records a duplicate error and adds a -(000*) on the end of the file name.

Will download beta and see how things go, be a couple of days before I can come back with results.

Just off topic a bit; Because I'm always on the move and using different computers I use run portableapps.com manager on a USB drive for programs like Thunderbird, (Firefox, Utorrent, Openoffice, etc.) anyone able to tell me if there is a portable version of Newsbin?

Just to clarify, the way Newsbin catches up looks like a very fast download, but it's not instant. It needs to read through the data on disk. Any other heavy IO would impact this speed. I'm sure you guys know this, but just saying. Certainly getting the latest is a good idea, I'm running it and don't see this behaviour.

Ebany, sorry, there is no portable version of newsbin.

Just wanted to report back. Have installed the update and given it a good run, all appears to be working great now. Many thanks :)
