slow on startup

Postby gkar » Sat Jul 21, 2012 8:53 am

Hi

When loading NB(and it always does this) it takes about a minute after the download list is loaded(takea a few seconds) before it responds. Drive LED shows little to no activity. Task manager shows NB in a non responsive state and at about 25% CPU running 6 or 7 threads. Disk shows access on GuiItems.db3-journal - GuiItems.dbs and c:\$Logfile(NTFS Volume Log) access is limited and then stops, at this point NB is still using about 25% CPU and is still non responsive for another 30 seconds or so, before it starts downloading and CPU drops to about 1%. BTW im seeing no network activity at all until it starts downloading.

MOTU is off

Running 64bit 6.40B6 Build 1985 with windows 7

thx for youre time Quade and others :)

The first thing I'd be curious about is if there's any indication of this with an empty download queue. You could either wait for it to clear out, or rename downloads.db3 then start up newsbin again. That would isolate the behaviour to processing the queue, or not.

If the queue is largish, and you happen to be in the middle of a particularly large download item, it does take some time for newsbin to analyze which blocks are on disk already and what still needs downloading. It could be that.

I think the "motd" thing might be related though. I'll check it out.

How big is your NBI file? It should be in the data folder.

That's pretty tiny. Mines 60K.

Ok, I'll think about it some more.

That is weird. I wonder if Guiitems.db3 was damaged?

ok got it...guiitems was ok, tried deteing it, NBP started up as per 1st post. Then i deleted AutoPAR2.DB3 and NBP started up fine! It has made another AutoPAR2.DB2 and stared downloading. Am I OK to run NBP like this? What have i lost by deleteing the AutoPAR2 file?

Nothing. It re-creates itself.

It stores information about files you've downloaded that aren't matched up with PAR files yet.
