Apart from ensuring your port is set correctly, it's possible your antivirus is interfering. When you upgrade Newsbin some AV see it as a completely different program. Try disabling it to see if that helps.

How many connections are you using?

Does it still download even with these errors?

If it's just dead, I'd assume a firewall is blocking Newsbin off the internet. Go into the search tab, make sure it's set to "internet" then search for something. If you get a connection error, a firewall is almost certainly the problem.

Are you using xsusenet by anychance?

I nearly reported a SSl problem but it turned out that xsusenet have dropped SSL connections for their free accounts and no longer offer it.

Very interesting. One wonders if it was for performance hit reasons or something else...

Thanks for the quick responses chaps,

No I'm not using Xsusnet, Giganews, I checked with them and they couldn't perceive any issues from their end.
5 Connections.
No it doesn't download at all, sort of sits there, the kb/s tick away, but no movement on the progress bars then the list of errors appear.
Nothing gets downloaded.

NB 64 is on the list of my exceptions for the firewall, and I've disabled my AVG, seemingly it makes no difference whether the AV is on or off for internet searches, they work fine.

So Ports?
Forgive my lack of knowledge, I'm a long term user but with little understanding of how Newsbin is set up (I did it 4 yrs ago)
How do I verify that they are set correctly?

How about doing the test I suggested? Something is blocking the connection. Giganews is up. The problem is on your end. You're doing this from home right? I've heard that some hotels will block Giganews by default.

Hi Quade,

Yep from home.

With the AV on or off the internet searches work fine.

Something wrong with the download part. Just sits then fails with lots of errors.

It means that giganews specifically is being blocked.

1 - I'd try changing the address to: "216.196.97.131". Then restart Newsbin and see if it works.

2 - I'd go into the server options and check "Use SSL" then set the SSL port to 443, then restart Newsbin and try again.

3 - Next, I might change the address to news-europe.giganews.com, restart and try again.

Giganews is fine. I'm using it right now so, it's a problem with the configuration or the connection.

Hi Quade,
Thanks for the input,

I have changed the SSL and the port
I'm already on News-Europe.

No Joy,

Where do I change the address? This is not something I have done before or can seem to find.

Then change it to "news.giganews.com".

It's in the server options. It's the address field.

Thanks for the response Quade.

I have done the above, also unistalled and reinstalled Newsbin Pro 64 just in case,
Re input the settings as suggested above.

Re entered Key and passwords for servers.

NB seems to just sit ate 47kb/s and not really download anything. then after a short while I'll get the errors.
Now here's a weird thing, If I attempt to go to the Giganews website, you know, to check my account it just doesn't connect, just waiting.....

Orange hasn't blocked Giganews has it?

Alternatively:-
Can I roll back to the previous versions that worked?

If you can run the previous version and everything works, that points to some program, somewhere on your computer is stopping this release of Newsbin getting through, or the settings are different. Anything you installed on your computer that might possibly do this, like peerguardian, AV, etc. is suspect.

I'm suspecting at this point, though, the older version doesn't work either. Worth checking tho.

I quickly disabled the SSL and with port 119 I got these responses:-

[19:02:14] ERROR Socket - Error: WSARecv Socket Error Code: 10060 A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

[19:02:14] ERROR NNTPSocket - Server:news.giganews.com NNTPServer: Timeout - Waiting for Server to send Data: Socket - Read or Write Timeout
[19:02:15] ERROR Socket - Error: WSARecv Socket Error Code: 10060 A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

[19:02:15] ERROR NNTPSocket - Server:news.giganews.com NNTPServer: Timeout - Waiting for Server to send Data: Socket - Read or Write Timeout

Not yet installed a previous version, I'll get back to you

Looks like you're being blocked. Just for grins add the server "news.astraweb.com", don't set a password then disable the giganews server and try to then update a group. Look at the log messages. You should get a 480 authentication errors. If those connections time out too, I'd guess there's something on your PC blocking the connections.

You don't have peerguardian or anything like that installed too?

with my guess would be that possibly your dns may have been modified. Try using an alternate provider such as open dns and would also check your host file. Best of luck Paul you are unsure of how to do any of the above steps , please let me know and I would be happy to help out

Just because I don't notice anything being mentioned about it, any changes to your router are suspect, too. But yeah, it's worth a quick astra test as Quade mentioned, that will at least tell you if giga specifically is being blocked, or all news ports. Thing is, SSL being blocked suggests a site specific block since you could be doing any number of things over SSL.

You also may want to cast your mind back to what triggered this. It started with a newsbin upgrade, but really, that wasn't it. Something else happened during that time frame. It might well have been out of your control, like your ISP blocking giga, but try to think of anything else that altered. Also, if you happen to have another computer there, just installing an evaluation of newsbin and quickly testing might point you in the right direction.

These are all excellent ideas and suggestions,
I'll get on to them asap, I very much appreciate all of your input

I swear blind it all went wrong post upgrade, but your right it could be something else entirely, there was a period that I wasn't really using NB and something could have happened then and I didn't notice.
However my Giga transfer stats were
10GB in June
1.2GB July

Astraweb idea:-
[18:12:51] Level: ERROR SERVER=news.astraweb.com, MSG=Password: Server asked for Username and Password but, They aren't set
[18:12:51] Level: ERROR SERVER=news.astraweb.com, MSG=Password: Server asked for Username and Password but, They aren't set

Now does that mean asrta is ok but Giga isn't, therefore Giga is blocked?
News servers are blocked internally or is this a 480 by another name?

No Peerguardian, just AVG free and Windows Firewall,

Router settings haven't changed, I looked in there just to check and all seems as normal.

I'll load Newsbin on to my works lap top and give that a try too.

DNS- TMM, ok I've chanaged the DNS, now HOST FILE? where's that hiding?

It's saying that specifically Giganews is blocked and that the AW connection works fine.

If you have a Giganews Gold account, you could try setting up the VPN and bypass any blocking that way.

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: news.giganews.com
Address: 216.196.97.131

This is giganews IP address. You could simply change the address from "news.giganews.com" in Newsbin to "216.196.97.131" and it'll use the IP with no DNS lookup.

I have a Platinum account so I'm going to try VprVPN.

Is this instead of or as well as my new found Open DNS project?

It's a parallel thing. A VPN will tunnel your data through the internet to a Giganews machine and then out onto the internet. It'll bypass any ISP blocking because they shouldn't even be able to tell that you're talking to giganews.

I don't think this has anything to do with DNS.
