correct way to switch servers fetching headers from?

Postby spotter » Tue Jul 10, 2012 11:18 pm

I just switched from astraweb to newshosting. I disabled astraweb and enabled newshosting (had an old one that's been disabled for a while due to dropping them a while back). newsbin has to redownload a heck of a lot of headers (probably went 1/2 months back) that I had already marked as read (a little confused why they showed) or deleted (this would make more sense).

is there a proper way to do this transition and I messed up, or no proper way?

The way I'd do it is:

1 - Set a "download age" of 2-5 days (depending on the last time you downloaded headers, with some overlap).

2 - Deactivate the older server

3 - Activate the new server.

4 - Select all the groups, right click "Post Storage/Use Download Age".

Then hit the update button so, all the groups get updated using the new server. It should only download "Download Age" worth of headers.

There's nothing wrong with the way you did it. It's just a bit less efficient.

is there anyway to be smart about it? i.e. peaking at headers and doing some binary search down?

You can load a group and see what the newest records are and then set the download age based on that. I'd use at least one day's worth of overlap.
