Usenetmonster SSL

I don't appear to be getting compression on my SSL connection to unlimited.usenetmonster.com. (6Mbs instead of 90Mbs) Anyone else seeing this or am I missing something?

Tnx

What version are you using? I wasn't aware that any news server supported SSL compression any more. Header compression is typically done a different way.

6.4b4 and release 6.32. I left out it's with headers only. I normally use usenetmonster but I opened a temporary account on giganews to test with. 6Mbps per connection on monster doing headers and 90Mbps on Giganews. When are you going to release a new beta without the zlib message?

Opened a ticket on monster also looking for clues.

Tnx

That sounds as if UsenetMonster has not implemented the compressed headers mechanism (Giganews has). That would explain the symptoms you see.

Yeah, Astraweb, Giganews, supernews all implement header compression across the board. Some of the other servers have it on some of the machines and not on others so, it's hit or miss. Some servers don't have it at all.

Yep, it used to be there but I guess it crept out the door when I wasn't looking.

Are you using 64 bits or 32? If 64, it might be worth trying 32 bits and see if the compression seems to come back.

I already tried 32 with no change. Will wait to see what monster support comes up with

Received my answer from Monster support. Guess it's time to shop for a new provider.
"Hi Dave,
We don't do compressed headers on our server, as most customers have switched to nzb's. 6Mb is about the right speed you should see from one header thread. Unfortunately there isn't anything else I can suggest to improve the speed of the header downloads.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
