6.40b4.1948 - very incorrect group post count !

6.40b4.1948 - very incorrect group post count for group alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.complete_cd in Giganews.

It is a superior group than newsbins suggested a.b.sounds.mp3, in my opinion and far better organized.

It probably has over 75 million(?) records but demo install of 6.40b4.1948 in 64 bit in near virgin clean Windows 7 showed under 230 thousand(?) and made it hard for me to spot the CORRECT alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.complete_cd in manual group addition mode.

It was first time list opened, and astraweb was set as fill server, and both were list ready at the time i believe. my date ranges and limits were all very generous in anticipation of the 75 million records, and my need to go back 3 years or so.

newsbin was semi fresh install, first ever of newsbin in my life for me, but I have used 6 other newsreaders thousands of times.

WORKAROUND : after initial recent posts loaded, I merely repeatedly used menu command : Groups > Download Special > Download 10,000,000 older posts
repetitions were made one at a time over many hours. I did not want to trust 'Download All headers' on such a massive group.

Other people noted similar gross undercount bug : viewtopic.php?f=43&t=27426

One thought it was a 31 bit rollover at 2 billion, but my research shows the count at 200+ million of r my group, not 2 billion message posts in history

====
overall I LOVE this product though have yet to see it run 12 straight hours without a crash on my VIRGIN clean Windows 7 Pro setup. maybe DEMO mode causes instabilities?

Did you download the groups list from your server? If yes, the number reported is the number reported by your server. If no then you should.

My Newsbin is reporting 73 million posts on complete_cd in the "group add" window. Only a.b.mp3 is larger at 305 million posts. They're not even close to rollover numbers. The largest group is boneless and it's reporting 4.6 billion posts in the add groups window so, it's not looking like there's any rollover issue. The groups list that ships with Newsbin is probably 10 years old.

Posts and files are completely different things. 73 million posts might end up being 1- 2 million files. Most files of any size require multiple posts. I'm looking at a 7 meg file here and it's made of 18 posts. 73 million isn't really that many. It would probably be a good idea to "Download all Headers" on that group and set the "Storage Age" to 1500 at least.

I don't see a bug here. What I see is that you simply haven't downloaded enough headers from the group.

Aha! I agree that it is probably the unexpected feature of a static list of header count, rather than proper operation by an excited first time user on first or second launch.... and my bug is probably that the add group interface did not indicate that the very very low count was possibly not from the real server list. The part that scared me was the fact that similar named groups existed with low counts, AND i was thinking of employing your low count filter feature to hide low count groups, but had not. I guess i needed to just manually pull the groups, or wait longer.

Not a functional bug, merely gui interface confusion issue at most. THANK YOU FOR REPLY and information !

closed for me!
