newsbin pro 6.33 download speed dropping

Postby grantsmith82 » Wed Jun 06, 2012 2:55 pm

Hi all,
i have been using this for a few years now but never really got into how it works etc etc..

anyway up untill a few weeks ago all had been fine but im having a few issues now.

i use www.newbin2.es for my downloads then they go into newsbin pro v6.33 and i am using the server news-europe.giganews.com

i have about a 30mb connection and always it downloads at max speed..

however recently i open newsbin pro and it starts off and i can see the speed rapidly increasing to 32mb then it drops off and starts downloading between 1-4mb

my ISP doesnt restrict the download speed etc..

after a few mins it may kick back up and goto 32mb and hold other times i have to restart or pause /resume downloads ( i think its more luck than anything that the speed increase again)

on my account i have access to 50 connection so im really unsure why the speed is dropping

could someone help me .. maybe some incorrect options ticket etc??

I'd probably try setting the connections to 10. Then restart Newsbin and see what speeds you get. More connections doesn't mean more speed. At 30 Mbps, 10 connections should be enough. If that doesn't help, I might try 20. I'd also look in the logging tab for any errors.

i will try that
i did contact giganews last night and they replied saying that i had exceeded number of connections as it may open new ones before old ones have closed properly (how do i solve that issue)?
never had the issue before. i dont have any anti virus s/w and my IP remains the same..

see reply below

I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I have reviewed our server logs and see
the following error for your account:

"exceeded max number of connections"

It appears that your newsreader is attempting to open a new connection
before it has completely finished closing a previous connection. This is
causing you to exceed the connection limit. Usually after 15-30 minutes
the stalled connections should terminate, so that new connections can be
started.

This is most frequently a problem with some newsreaders. If all of your
allowed connections are being used, and you change newsgroups or try to
download headers, the new connection will be denied causing the error you
are experiencing. If this is the problem, simply lowering the number of
connections in your newsreader will solve it.

This can also be interference from anti-virus or firewall software, even if
you haven't made any changes. These types of software can cause a closing
connection to hang open as the new one is trying to open, resulting in a
conflict.

This error can also happen if your computer was recently disconnected and
reconnected to the Internet or if your ISP has recently assigned your
computer a new IP address. Sometimes the connections opened with your
previous IP address remain stale and just need to time-out.

Please close your newsreader, wait 20 minutes, then try reconnecting with a
lower number of connections. If this problem persists, please try
connecting with all of your firewall, anti-virus, spyware, and other
security software temporarily disabled. In some cases, you may also need
to reboot your computer and router. If either of these are holding onto
your connection, a simple reboot will fix most other issues.

Well, the advice in my original post would solve this too. It's almost always a bad idea to run absolute max connections because you'll tend to run out sometimes. Cutting the connections back will give you a large connection buffer to work with.

That's a completely different error. It's probably why you were running out of connections though. This suggests Newsbin is having a hard time talking to giga. I'd try turning on SSL if you're not using SSL now. Enable it in the options, then restart Newsbin. Looks like you basic problem, the source of all of this, is that you get these connection failure.

You might ask any firewall or virus scanner to ignore the traffic on Port 119, 443 and 563 TCP. Those are the ports Newsbin might use to talk to the news server.

Does it prevent download or does it just happen from time to time?

Does it happen if you turn off SSL?

Have you tried and alternate SSL port?

i have the same issue. Doesnt happen when I disable ssl. It must be SSL that is not working well with supernews?

I'm using AW and SN with SSL (default ports) and have no problem with either.

I think security software is the culprit most of the time.
