download speed is fluctuating and stopping

Postby steve1978 » Tue Jun 05, 2012 8:52 am

Hi,

I am on the current build v1882. i have a 100 meg internet line. my internet line is on and working, i have been using Netuptime monitor to make sure that my internet line isnt the culprit. . i am on Astraweb. when i watch newsbin the speeds vary so much, sometimes it site at 0 for minutes then it shoots up to 100meg then just fluctuates like mad.

The problem is either my isp is shaping the traffic causing huge fluctuating speeds, Astraweb are rubbish or newsbin is not doing what it should be doing. any help or advice appreciated.

See attached picture as the example. its almost like clockwork!

Well, given how it seems to burst every 15 seconds, it's highly unlikely it's newsbin, was going to suggest you look at options/scheduler. I must admit, astra wouldn't be my first guess - it doesn't do them any favours to be bursting like that, although I guess the question is whether or not you see this around the clock, just the once or twice, only at peak times, etc. I have seen performance issues at peak times, it sort of goes with the territory. Also, how many connections are you using? It's highly unlikely it's this, but don't overdo it. Next, take your router out of the loop if possible, see if that's related - go right from modem to computer. If that's not possible(2 in 1), then check the settings, try disabling any 'performance enhancements' temporarily to test it. After that, I'd suspect the ISP.

Well, I suppose it's possible it's your NIC too, but I'd doubt that. As much as you can remove from the loop as possible is helpful for you in tracking it down. Trying another computer on the network is probably the best bang for your buck if possible.

1 - I'd look at the logging tab to start.

2 - Look down at the status bar. You'll see "Cache: X/Y" if X goes to zero, that means newsbin has downloaded all it can and is waiting to write the data out to disk. This will stall the download.

3 - Are you trying to use the speed limiter?

Thanks for al the suggestions. I will give them a go.

The speed isnt around the clock but only at certain times. I am not using any of the routers built in performance enhancers. its really annoying. I uppose i could try using a different client to rule that out also. thansk for your time.

I get a constant 100 Mbps to a mix of servers and Newsbin is easily capable of 400 Mbps downloads (tested to my local server). The question is whether the problem is your PC, Newsbin, the network or the server. If you see cache = 0, then you know the problem is getting the data written to disk. Either the disk is slow or something else is using the disk at the same time.
