I consider that pretty typical. During heavy downloads, I'll see 200 or more depending on what I'm downloading or repairing.

really? I never s have seen that before it that high now given that I am a heavy downloader I would expect but I would have noticed more RAM being used on a daily basis however I've never seen it quite as high as that which perplexes me

I love the performance options.. being able to pause downloading during unrar and repair is great for me..
My disks couldn't keep up and unrarring took ages when there was still a download busy.
Doing this by hand was possible but not great when downloading a lot of different rar sets...

Way to go :)

Glad you like it. ""no memory buffering" mode reduces memory usage significantly and in my case is a smidge faster than the other way. Might be worth experimenting with it. It's still experimental.

Yeah. Newsbin trades RAM for performance. Some people have asked me to tone down the work for lesser machines. I mean, just look at all the people still running XP. So, I've added some ways to reduce load on your machines. Basically back off some of the performance optimizations.

"Reduced UNRAR and Repair priority" also turns down some of the background worker threads.

You HAVE to restart Newsbin for these changes to kick in.

If I fire up NBP 6.40b2 and then immediately exit I get the message box that NBP has been closed. My Event Log has these in them:

Faulting application name: NewsbinPro64.exe, version: 6.4.1.0, time stamp: 0x4fbf7a6a
Faulting module name: NewsbinPro64.exe, version: 6.4.1.0, time stamp: 0x4fbf7a6a

Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\Newsbin\NewsbinPro64.exe

If I download groups then exit I get no error messages at all. I'll play around some more

Downloaded some files then exited with no problem. Seems like to avoid the error you need to download first.

Btw.. I am using the High Performance PC option.

I'm trying to repro this on a quad core intel, tons of memory, no matter how fast I quit after starting I can't trigger it. Sometimes these things can be timing-based. Anything sound different on your computer(e.g. AMD not Intel, number of cores, etc.)?

I wonder if it's a function of numbers of items in the download list or number of items in the files list.

2 things:

I turned on "Pause Download during UnRAR/Repair", restarted and it still downloads during repairing and unaring.

It now downloads all the par's, even if none are needed (Verified with QuickPar). It didn't used to do this.

My Processing Options under AutoPar Options are: (These haven't changed in ages)
Disable Autopar - off
Send pars to wishlist - off
Automatically UnRAR Complete Files - On
Remove repaired but, not unrared sets in the download list - On
Delete RARs and PARS on successful UnRAR. - On
Pause PARS and only download the ones needed for Repair. - On
Aggressive Assembly Mode - off

I'm running Windows XP SP3 32 bit.

After watching the DL's a bit more, it seems it doesn't DL unneeded par's every time. I'll keep an eye on it some more and see if I can see a pattern.

I'd suggest watching the logging tab. If an unrar fails, all the pars are unpaused. So, if you see this some of the time, I think it suggests that you're getting unrar failures from time to time.

Also, the options ONLY apply when adding files to the download list, so, items added with different options settings will act differently.

When you select "Pause Download during..." it doesn't actually pause the download, it pauses writing to disk so, the cache will be used until it goes empty and then the download will pause.

I did some testing the other day on big unrars and Newsbin was within 5 seconds of WinRAR on a large download. It was 5 seconds quicker for a 3.5 minutes unrar. This was a 6 GB download. D did the same test with a 10 GB download and his results were essentially the same.

Pop the download open and look at a newly added download. Hit the +.

- If the pars are unpaused from the get go, Newsbin is unpausing them when adding to download. This implies options.

- If they're paused, except for the small one, the download goes and then you see them all unpause, Newsbin went into disaster recovery mode and downloads them all.

I'm unclear what's happening. My pars don't unpause unless I need them.

Hi,

I have a few problems using NB 6.40 B2

Download stops fully and when i try a tab change to the logging tab the program stops responding. It looks that I can reproduce this problem when I a few perform sort actions in the download list.

This problem occurs so often that it is no longer acceptable for me to use 6.40B2 and i downgraded to

It also looks like the chakcache parameter isn't working when i change the size of the chankcache i dont see it back in the NB interface there it stays on 100.

@ JanJonkman: The ChunkCache is under performance options in the nbi now.

Code: Select all

ChunkCacheSize=300
MemCacheLimit=900
PauseDownload=0

Plus, JanJonkman, if you can narrow down what you do to trigger the lockup, that would be useful, like how many posts you have in the queue, which sort operations you're doing, etc. It's also good to know things like your system specs, OS too.

Just installed the beta to check it out. I selected performance option (all boxes unchecked). Then downloaded a set of files and the speedo showed about 10Kbps less than I am used to. Fooled with the number of connections (up and down) (usually set at 10) and noted speeds. I could not get the speed up to Ver. 6.32 levels. Went back to Ver. 6.32 and downloaded same set at 10 connections. The speed was back up. The time between downloads was under 5 min. so tried to keep things constant. I am using an i920@4ghz, 12g ram win7/64 and a 1T HDD with lots of space. Do I need to adjust any performance parameters in 6.4 to have the higher speed?

The performance options are to slow Newsbin down. Not make it faster. Some people's machines simply can't take unraring and downloading at the same time for example.

Are you on dialup or something? 10 Kbps is like something you'd measure back in dialup days. I doubt the speed reading in Newsbin are even accurate down to that slow to be honest. I'm thinking you're reporting the wrong number. If it was 200 Kbps slower then we're starting to get into significant territory.

What do you have set in the performance options? I'm downloading at 100 Mbps without too much effort. Look at the "Cache" line on the status bar. If the cache is 0/100 that means Newsbin is waiting on the disk drive.

It doesn't pause the download, it pauses the writing to disk. Watch the cache line. It should go empty during the unrar/repair. I know I said I would pause the download but, that didn't seem necessary. Downloading won't slow the unrar, downloading and saving to disk will. In that way if someone wanted to, they could set a huge chunk cache and continue the download even while the unrar/repair is happening.

I'm not clear if this works if you have the experimental "no buffer" download enabled. That's the one in the performance options.

I just re-did the entire comparison. Same file set with in 5 minutes of each other, 10 connections and cache shows 90/100. Same results for me. I am an astraweb user on a charter 30m cable line. The 6.3 is consistently 7-10M better. This is no issue for me as the 6.3 rocks.

Just for shits and grins, in the new performance options, how about clicking "Write Download Files with no Memory Buffering" and see how the speed is.

That might let me narrow this down.

Dam those Shits an Giggles are fun. So first off I did a clean install of the beta. Reload all the group post data new as well. My down and up speeds are pretty much the same now on either 6.3 or the beta. Checking that box degrades the speed to about half. If the speeds drop off again I will start comparing again and advise. Ever since Al Gore invented the internet there have been ghosts in the machine. Tks. as always for the best software and development team ever.

It's a funny thing, I'm not surprised it's slower but, "no buffer" mode is actually faster on my machine for some reason. It writes each chunk out to disk and when the file finishes, combines the files together into the file. At 30 Mbps, I'm really surprised you see a reduction in performance. On my machine, "no buffer" mode will get you up to 400 Mbps file download speeds. You're just downloading to a regular internal disk? Wonder if the V scanner might have something to do with the odd speed variations.

As you said, it's a mystery.

Now don't go giggles on me..using Norton and Malwarebytes. I can shut down the active protection to fool with it when I have time. What ISP gives you those speeds? Charter may have a 100m service now but you play huge for it here in the NE.

I have 100 Mbps to the net but, have a news server on my network for high speed testing. It's a Linux virtual machine with Centos 5.7 on it. It comes with INND. I post problem files to the server and test over my gigabit Ethernet.

I am having the same issue with all par2 files being downloaded even if the rar files have no errors. I first noticed it with 6.32 (although it could have occured before this version) but it also occurs with 6.4b2 and 6.33 (I'm currently running 6.33 - Build 1882 - I installed 6.4b2 before 6.33). "Disable Automatic PAR unpausing" is unchecked (and has always been unchecked) and I have even turned on "Aggressive Assembly mode" without effect (with a program restart). I don't know if it occurs on all downloads as many downloads are unattended and I have PAR and RAR deletion enabled. I'm am on Win7 Ultmate-x64. 16GB memory. I don't suspect that this is the cause but I have recently installed MultiPAR (in addition to having QuickPAR installed) and MultiPAR is the default "par" program. When I installed 6.4b2 I did add RemovePerfect=0 but this problem existed before 6.4b2. When I submit the download the PAR2 files all start as paused.

I will disable RAR and PAR deletion to see if this problem occurs on all downloads.

Aggressive assembly can cause this in combination with an unusually posted item. It's funny, one of the more common complaints with newsbin in the early v6 days was 'posts getting stuck', but now there's been more options put in place to allow for customization of behaviour when there's a problematic post it seems like the opposite. I was nagging Quade about implementing a more aggressive option, now I wonder if it should be a hidden option. :-)

Basically, you should *only* enable aggressive mode if you have a very reliable server. The downside is that if there's ever a poorly posted item and newsbin can't connect the pars to the post, then newsbin will be...aggressive. Also, with a post missing a lot of chunks, unless you're keeping the files around or more importantly are monitoring the download (if it needed to repair, apart from the log you'd have no evidence of incompleteness!), how do you know the state of the post on the server? I know you've suggested you saw this prior to setting it, but number one is if you don't like this possibility, then disable aggressive, then observe results. When you wipe evidence of downloads, that's going to be problematic tracking down any problem. I know this end, what I download, I don't see this problem, except in very rare instances, and that's with aggressive.

Thank you for the feedback!

I had just enabled aggressive mode, which I had never used before, to see if it would mitigate the problem. Interestingly enough, with aggressive mode on, all my subsequent downloads have downloaded correctly, with no extraneous PARs being downloaded. Per your suggestion, I have disabled aggressive mode, to see if the problem reappears with a more basic set of settings.

It's my opinion that this is just a co-incidence. I've suggested ways to determine what's happening but, have gotten no feedback

1 - If you add a set to download and the PARS aren't paused, this is a settings issue.

2 - If you add a set to download and the PARS are paused but, then they unpause after the download completes, this indicates that something went wrong in repair or unrar so, Newsbin just tossed all the pars in.

It's not clear to me what people are seeing. I can say that I never have all the pars download in 6.40B2 but, my setup is pretty blessed so, I'm not surprised.
