Won't display new headers until after restart

Postby Hardball » Sun Apr 22, 2012 1:19 am

Recently, after no apparent change, 6.30 stopped showing any headers downloaded since the last program restart. Meaning after I download new headers I have to close NBPro and restart it before the "new Records" column will reflect the activity or a "Show Posts" command will display the most recent headers. I have let the program sit as long as thirty minutes, to ensure there was ample time to process the new records, with no effect. However, after I close NBPro and reopen it acts just like it used to when the downloading process was complete, quickly advancing the number of "New Records" to reflect the most recent download. I can then "Show Posts" like normal. I tried updating to the most recent version 6.31, no effect. Minor annoyance but if there is something I can do...

Thanks for any ideas you might have!

Hmm, odd one. Couple things to check: what happens if you open up a group that you've updated without regard to the new records column? Do you see new posts? This will tell you if it's just a cosmetic issue of the column not updating or something more serious where processing isn't happening. Secondly, any messages of note in the logging pane when you update?

FYI, if you look in the cache status box at the bottom of the program, the number of groups still queued up to be processed are indicated in brackets.

I suppose it's conceivable something in your layout prefs got pooched, which could be fixed by resetting your layout, but keep in mind this means setting up the layout again.

1 - What happens if you close the tab and re-open the group?

2 - Do you see numbers in parens at the bottom in the "Cache" segment? Something like "(2)"?

The numbers represent records to be imported before they can be displayed.

First question: it will not show the posts until after the restart. Not just in the new records column but also when I show posts and open a window for the group. It only shows the headers downloaded PRIOR to the last restart.

Second question: I just went through and updates a single group. No log entries other than the normal program start up entries.

As to the cache: When I downloaded latest to a single group the cache went from "85/100 (999)" to "85/100 (1002)" it stayed that way for several minutes before I shutdown and restarted the program. Upon restart the cache returned to "85/100 (999)" as it updated the groups records to reflect the newest header download.

Closing the groups tab and reopening it had no effect.

Also this started after no apparent change to my system. I manually update all my software and had not done so just prior to this issue starting. I have since ensured everything is up-to-date. Just one day it didn't update, causing a fair amount of bafflement on my part.

Thanks again for you guys looking at this!

"85/100 (999)"

Is the key. There are 999 blocks of records waiting to import. For whatever reason your import isn't working. The fact it works on restart is just luck of the draw. It finds the new records before trying to process the old. If it had been a different group, you probably still wouldn't see them.

How about starting it, then let if just sit there and see if the number in parens goes down. Until it hits 0, you won't have the most updated records in the groups. If it never goes down, you probably have a corrupt RV4 file that's preventing the import of the records.

After reading your earlier posts, I realized that the cache was the issue. While I had left it open for a few hours after DL completion for a few times I have never just let it sit like you suggested. I did today, I let it sit for ~10 hours and the cache did not clear. How do I go about clearing the cache or replacing the corrupted file?

Thanks,

Search for .RV4 files in the data folder. You have 1000 of them in there. You can kill them all and lose some data or try to figure out which one it's stuck on. "Procmon" would probably show you which one Newsbin's sticking on.

The data folder's on a regular internal disk?

Well once again the most helpful and useful forum, albeit limited in scope, has come through. Thanks for your help! everything is five by! For the record I moved the offending files to a new folder in the groups spool folders. Once the two with the most files were moved the rest updated what was cached in them and the program was back up to snuff.
