Running NB6 after many hours kills net connection

Postby Fastrotor » Sun Apr 01, 2012 12:00 pm

Hi Guys,
Got a weird one.... been doing this for a while now over most V6's , but after a good period of time downloading , the net on the same machine is next to useless...... Newsbin is still able to download at full speed... Pausing it does not solve the problem. Trying to get a basic webpage to come up can take minutes or not at all.

Using other computers thru my wifi still work (ie modem seems ok then )

I can un-pause newsbin and it will happily go back to full speed..... but web and email almost no go..

Only way to fix is a complete restart and then its perfect again.

I originally had a billion 7800NL and it WOULD cause the same problem on this unit as the PC itself is currently having.... no net or mail, but newsbin still works thru it fine.... So i went back to my older billion 7401vgp R3 , and strange enough this does not lock out other users on other computers , even when the main comp has the above problem.

SO aside from grumbling about having to let my new modem sit idly by......... anyone got any ideas why the PC running NB6 basically kills all net except to NB itself, until a reset ??

Cache issues or something ?? ANysuggestion to try.??

Thanks

I'd check RAM usage using task manager when this happens. Sounds more like your other applications have been paged out of memory and need to be slowly brought back in by windows.

I'm a little unclear about what happens when you switch routers. It sounds like you're having trouble either way, but when you say 'complete restart', have you tried restarting just the modem? If that fixes it, then the problem may lie there. It's a little strange that a problem triggered from one computer could have such a bad effect on other computers on the network, I'm tempted to think possibly overall network configuration problems.

Another thing to try if Quade's suggestion doesn't pan out is to try updating the NIC drivers on the troublesome computer, or at least check out there and see if there have been problems in the past with them. If they get into some sort of loop where they're hammering the router but not receiving packets successfully, this could cause bizarre problems like this. I'd check this first right after you've monitored the memory issue.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, just started into a few days of solid dl'ing and so will be able to check these things out tomorrow no doubt. the comp was the same this morning , just endless waiting for web pages, untill i reset the comp.

Didn't need to touch this modem (the older 7401vgp r3 billion) it seems to handle all this fine. It was only the newer 7800nl billion model that would also restrict net access.

So for now it's only the PC with issues . Will report back tomorrow with info

Thanks.

DT,
i just thought about your suggestion and figured i'd try it now before it got back to a locked up state, else id have to wait another day again anyway, and there was an update for the NIC available. (realtek nic on board)

So we shall see what happens :)

Thanks
